Although lighter weight, it is same roaster as I remember from childhood
Granite Ware 0509-2 18-Inch Covered Oval RoasterI believe I made a wise purchase and I hope you will too!I received my roaster today as promised. These roaster pans have been a familiar item around my family gatherings since I was old enough to remember. Perhaps they are lighter weight than years ago but this appears to be good quality although lighter than what I remember them to be.Something of concern to me is reviews which state there has been rusting at the chips and even in areas not chipped. I am a bit confused as to how this roaster can chip, but something to keep in mind. Making sure the roaster is completely and thoroughly dry after each washing might help to prevent rust. I will watch for this problem, however.I purchased this roaster because, even though I may only use it twice a year, the purchase price sold me as it will not be necessary to purchase a disposable aluminum roaster pan every time I need one. I won’t be using it until Thanksgiving, but, if possible, I will do a follow-up review at that time.Under product description please note the following text: “COVER CAN BE USED AS A SEPARATE OPEN ROASTER: LID WORKS AS A ROASTER TOO! It cooks faster and more evenly than other roasters, and is a better value than stainless steel roasters. The handles are built to hold the weight of the bird much better than a flimsy, disposable, aluminum foil tray.”I was pleased to see that and thought, hmmmm, that is curious, how can it be used for that with the handle on top. IT WAS THEN THAT I REALIZED THAT THIS PRODUCT DESCRIPTION IS A GENERALIZED DESCRIPTION FOR ALL OF THEIR ROASTERS and not specific to Granite Ware 0509-2 18-Inch Covered Oval Roaster you are purchasing here.In case you might be interested, you can purchase a silicone turkey lifter which has convenient handles and durable construction make lifting large roasts and poultry effortless. I purchased this last year and it sure beats trying to stick roasting forks at both ends to lift out the turkey especially if the turkey is so tender it wants to fall apart. Had that happen, made a royal mess and burnt my hand when it plopped out and sloshed turkey juice all over the place. I do not know if it is acceptable to give the product description on this review, but you can search for it pretty easily.

Make sure you get the right size (actual measurements below)
I've been using the Graniteware 19-Inch Oval Roaster for years, and I've always been very happy with the results. When this year's Thanksgiving turkey was unacceptably dry, therefore, I knew it was user error - the turkey was a bit over eight pounds, and that was just way too much space around the bird.Leaping to my Amazon account, I immediately ordered the 15", which arrived in good order two days later, followed by mirth all around. While the description says the 15" can handle up to a 12 pound bird, you'll need a mallet to get it to fit. Back to Amazon to order the 18" for next year (why 18 and not 17? One of life's little mysteries). The measurements in the Amazon titles are from the ends of the handles. Here are the actual measurement of the three roasters (Depending on the brand of turkey, and how big of a roast rack you're using, the lid may not close for bigger birds):19" - interior length is 16", interior width is 12". 14 to 19+ pound turkey.18" - interior length is 15", interior width is 11". 9 to 14- pounders.15" - interior length is 13", interior width is 9". 9 pounds or below.I don't own the 13", but it's meant for chicken-sized poultry, and has a different style of handle.Given the low Amazon price, I decided to keep all three roasters. Since they nest, with the lids inverted on top of the base, they don't take up much more storage space than just the 19" alone.(Update - it looks like Amazon fixed the description for the turkey size, but they're still using the handle-to-handle measurements)

I'm Not A Pro BUT 40 yrs +
Originally I inherited an old roaster which resembled this one-it was heavier but what wasn't 60+yrs ago. Then I bought one. Then I bought another, an all clad which was insanely expensive for 1x a yr. and it SUCKED-BADLY. All the wonderful drippings evaporated & the turkey came out dry. Went back to this one, again ,& the results were hands down the best between the 2. I have the 18" and have not roasted a turkey larger that 14lbs. Therefore cannot comment on a bird larger. But I thought it to be a perfect size for my needs. I also have not used a rack, instead I use rolled up alum foil (like a snake) and placed under both ends, then I use big fat carrots in the middle(which adds to the beautiful drippings/gravy taste).Turkey comes out beautifully, and most importantly(for me) is the drippings, which leads to gravy(which I love more than the turkey itself). Now w/ COVID19, I'll be getting a smaller turkey, 12-13lb, lots of left over GOOD turkey & gravy to freeze for 2. And this roaster will always be used. Happy, Safe, & Peace filled holidays to all!
