How to Play Erhu, the Chinese Violin: The Full Version (Second Edition)

Great for the person looking to buy and learn how to play the erhu.
Excellent choice for the beginner erhu player. Goes over a lot that you need to learn when starting erhu. Includes how to pick a quality instrument, tuning, reading Asian numerical music notation, and a ton more. If you’re thinking about buying a erhu this is a good place to start.

not for first time beginner
The first section is very well to describe erhu components . the practice sections are very difficult for first timer to understand. I feel "Youtube " are doing better job.

Good information
One of the only erhu information books in English

Chinese "violin"
I have an erhu. Fascinating how a two stringed instrument can sound just as good as a four-stringed violin!

Small size and not all that informative
What we see in the sample book here in Amazon comprises the majority of the book that isn't musical notation. The book is smaller than I expected it to be (admittedly I didn't read the details before ordering). It's about half the size of a standard music book. As a result the sheet music is small and difficult to read (at least for these eyes). The introduction and "instructive" part of the book is fairly lacking. Most notable is the omission of information on how to best use the bow and string fingers to produce sound. Most beginning players will produce a sound similar to a cat being slowly dragged into a bathtub. There is nothing here in this book to improve that situation. It doesn't provide hints in how to best use the bow, what kind of finger pressure to use on the strings, whether to use fingertips or fingernails as string stops, etc. There is quite a bit of sheet music in it with detailed notations-- if one can see them. The primary flaw is in lack of information for beginners both in setting up and playing the instrument... the kind of "inside tips" one would appreciate in such a book. After fully examining it I'm convinced one can learn far more by simply browsing the Net or watching YouTube "how to's". There's simply not enough introductory or suggestions to make this more than a "skims the surface" introduction to the instrument.

Imprescindible
Aunque no hay mucho donde elegir, es un libro muy completo sobre este fascinante instrumento. Podia haberse traducido a español. (lo tengo medio traducido para uso personal)

Very good
I am totally new to erhu but I think this book is very good for a beginner. There wasn't any French version but this book is very clear, so even if you don't speak English very well, it is not too hard to understand (I personally read it in 2 days while not being perfectly fluent). There are a lot of pictures and I find it really complete and enjoyable to read. The delivery was way before what I expected (I think it was like 1 week in advance). There are also many songs to play. However, I think it can be a bit hard to understand if you don't know music at all. I can read music and I know the rules well so it was clear for me but it may not be for everyone.

Muy buen material
Es muy buen método, a pesar de estar en ingles contiene lo necesario para aprender mas sobre cada parte del erhu y poder ejecutarlo
