Sleepless in Seattle (Special Edition)

This is a Winner hands down. Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan do you need to say more. Great Dialogue, picture, sound quality wonderful. The added bonus of the 10th Anniversary edition comments (if you choose that option when you watch) adds to the fun. Finding out what was going on during a particular scene, filming challenges etc is something I really appreciate. Have fun, know I did!

Stars two of my favorite actors at their best. An usual story that still captures hearts by one of the best romantic comedy directors of my lifetime. Highly recommend it. The only thing I wish is to know what happened to them all these years later...

A man in Chicago, Sam Baldwin's (Tom Hanks), wife passes away and he starts to wonder if Chicago is still the place for him and his son to live. While Sam and his son Jonah (Ross Malinger) are trying to find what their next home and place in life might just be - there is someone else in search of something as well in Baltimore, MD.Annie Reed (Meg Ryan) a writer lives in Baltimore, MD with her Fiancé Walter (Bill Pullman) and on the surface as well as to even herself is very happy but yet also seems to be lacking something, and in search of something. However while Annie is certainly looking and yearning for something more, she also has no idea what it is exactly that she may even be looking for!Sam decides to start a new life, or rather a new chapter in both his and Jonah’s life in Seattle Washington….new home, new job, new everything except for he then starts to feel a need for something more as the new chapter of his life has just began.Through a few things that may or may not just happen by chance at just maybe the right times – both Sam and Jonah, as well as of course Annie may find not just what they were looking for but a lot more than they ever could or would have dreamed of finding.Now that’s my DVD or Blu-ray ‘cover’ portion of the review…..I wanted to try and capture the essence of what THIS movie is about without actually revealing anything about the movie. This movie is as I have been told, a re-telling or re-interpretation of “An Affair to Remember”. I have never seen that movie, and I may or may not ever see that movie, so, my review is based on as well as inspired by “Sleepless in Seattle”.I attempted to capture the heart and soul of “Sleepless in Seattle” in my review and it was extremely difficult to do so (for me personally anyways) without giving away the plot or the entire movie for that matter.This movie did come out in 1993 – so could I have been more liberal in my description of the characters and the plot? Perhaps, however I wanted to write a review with the idea it was being read by someone who had never seen the movie.While the plot is not that complicated, and at points in the movie may even be predictable (or it may not be) that does not in any way take away from how great this movie is.This movie is Tom Hanks at his finest, not too long before Forest Gump as well as Meg Ryan when she was still Meg Ryan.I am sorry to bring it up, BUT Meg Ryan looks so different now it’s almost as if I have trouble even thinking of her as Meg Ryan. I am not picking on or making fun of Meg Ryan, rather I am making the point that she looks nothing like she did in “Sleepless In Seattle” and it is not just because she is older.The *Blu-Ray’s (*Sleepless in Seattle ( Sleep less in Seattle ) [ Blu-Ray, Reg.A/B/C Import - Sweden) picture quality and sound quality compared to the DVD are so much better! The one gripe I have about this edition of the movie is the lack of special features compared to previous DVD releases of the film. However I really love this movie on Blu-Ray and plan to get a used DVD of the movie just so I can get all those special features. It would have been so nice if the special features had been included on or with this Blu-Ray! Or, what could have been done (as I have seen with other movies and even some video games before) is that you have the main title on Blu-Ray and then your special features are on a separate Blu-Ray or DVD (but included in the package with your Blu-Ray).I see the movie is in stock, as of this writing on 3-25-2015. However at some point the movie will get harder to find as there were only so many Blu-Rays made. Of course if there is enough of a demand for the movie, there may be a major Blu-Ray release in the future…..like at the 30th anniversary mark in 2023 maybe? I do not get why such a film is not more widely available on Blu-Ray….far lesser and inferior films are on Blu-Ray…..just go into your local video store, Wal-Mart or Target and look at the Blu-Rays! Close to half of them are crap! And we cannot have “Sleepless in Seattle” more widely available on Blu-Ray? What’s up with that?For most people, this is one to own! This is for sure one of those modern classic movies you cannot go wrong with!

This is a classic movie. We watch it once a year around Christmas or Valentine's Day.

Love this movie. I do recommend it.

A simple story but beautiful nonetheless with great caste!

VorbemerkungenFilme, die mit neuen Regie-Mitteln arbeiten, werden von normativen Einfaltspinseln zu gern kopiert, werden Merksätze auf ähnlich scheinende Fälle angewandt. So ist man heute nicht mehr nur in Seattle schlaflos, sondern in jedem Kuhdorf, wo man schon wegen des Provinzialismus ins Koma fallen sollte, können die reaktionären Gemüter nicht mehr ruhig schlafen. Man spricht auch vom Missbrauch künstlerischer Mittel, aber bei dem allgemeinen Ideen-Diebstahl und den professionellen Berufslügereien sollte das nicht mehr erschrecken. Wurde in einem exzellenten Filmkunstwerk das Piano szenisch sorgfältig integriert, klimpert es heute tv-gekapert; hat man elektronisch passende Reizklangfolgen dezent als dramatisches Mittel aufbauend verwandt, sind heute die Szenen mit belanglosem Geräuschmüll versalzen und entwerten schauspielerisches Können. Hier aber sind wir am Original des Erfindungsreichtums, der Originalität und der subtilen Dramatik – sehen wir mal von dem Geschrei einer Art Musical-Verschnittes ab.Das WerkSam hat seine Frau, Jonah seine Mutter verloren. Der Sohn muss zusehen, wie sich der Vater durch Arbeit und Termine zu betäuben versucht. Also ruft er zu Weihnachten eine Rundfunk-Beratungspsychologin an. Während US-Amerika Zeuge dieses Trialoges wird, lauscht eine (anderweitig sehr verliebte) Frau im Auto der Sendung. Sie kann sich dem Problem nicht mehr entziehen: Die Stimme des Vaters, die beherzte Aktivität des Achtjährigen und die geschickten Fragen der Psychologin bestimmen die Gedanken einer Frau, die im Begriffe steht, einen netten Mann zu heiraten.Je mehr sie in „den Fall“ verwickelt wird, desto stärker belastet sie die Zerrissenheit ihrer Gefühle. Endlich ver-abredet Jonah mit Hilfe seiner ebenso klugen wie rigorosen Freundin mit Annie einen Treffpunkt in New York, und hier laufen die Linien von Baltimore und Seattle zusammen. Auf dem Empire-State-Building hätte man sich fast verfehlt: Es ist Jonahs vergessener Rucksack, der die drei endlich zusammenführt – mit Teddy Howard im Gepäck. So etwas vergisst man nicht!Der ethische AspektDie Parallele zu dem wesentlich jüngeren Filmwerk „Ein Sommer mit Paul“ wird deutlich: Zwei Männer, zwei Söhne vermissen Frau bzw. Mutter, und die Kinder verarbeiten beide den Verlust. Die Väter werden gedrängt, etwas zu tun. Sie sind schließlich die Erwachsenen, sie tragen die Verantwortung, und doch sind es die Söhne, die die Entscheidungen für die Zukunft einleiten.In beiden Filmen spielen die Freundinnen der Jungen wichtige Rollen. Sie spannen Brücken, die den glück-lichen Fortgang des Dramas ermöglichen bzw. beschleunigen.Es ist eine hommage an Kinder, die nicht zusehen wollen, wie ihnen die Väter entgleiten. Und es würdigt die Väter, die lernen können, zunehmend die Signale ihrer Kinder wahr- und damit ernstzunehmen.Zaudern die Erwachsenen, folgen die Kinder konsequent der von ihnen aufgenommenen Spur. Es ist ihr beson-deres Begabungspotential, das ihnen Kraft verleiht, gegen die scheinbar verfahrene Einstellung der „Großen“ konstruktiv und schöpferisch, also handelnd wie idealorientiert, das Anliegen der jeweiligen Familie zum Erfolg zu führen. Es gibt keinen Grund zu verzweifeln, heißt ihre Botschaft. Sie gilt.Der schöpferische VollzugGeht es dem 9-jährigen Paul um die Rückgewinnung seines Vaters und dessen Rettung vor dem psychischen Aus, versucht der 8-jährige Jonah, zwei Menschen aufeinander zuzuführen, von denen er weiß, dass sie füreinander bestimmt sind. (Zunächst rätseln die Erwachsenen um den Begriff „Magie“ und das Umeinander zweier Unterbewusstseinsneurosen – die Kinder kennen sich da wohl etwas souveräner aus!).Jessica ist ihm dafür Inspiration, Impulsgeberin und Freundin in der Not, ebenso von ihrem Einsatz überzeugt wie Jonah von dem seinen. Sie bestärkt ihren Freund in dem Gefühl, sich auf die Kosmischen Kräfte berufen zu können. Ihnen arbeiten Annie und Sam, sein Vater, in geteilter Auffassung zu, obwohl der Vater es mit größtem Vorbehalt tut. Aber die junge Frau aus Baltimore akzeptiert die ihr sich offenbarenden Zeichen, und es ist völlig klar, dass sie und Jonah auf gleicher Wellenlänge senden und empfangen. Das ist eine Brücke, die der Vater am Ende wie selbstverständlich gehen kann. Ihm ist zudem nicht entgangen, welche Faszination von dieser jungen Frau ausgeht, als er ihr, ohne sie zu kennen, im Flughafen erstmalig in die Augen schaut und sie später auf der Straße begrüßt und sie derart verwirrt, dass sie auf den Verkehr nicht mehr achten kann.Paul, der seinen Vater aus dem Loch herausholen will, in welchem seine Trauer ihn gefangen hält, hat mit seiner Freundin Emma eine starke bis kühne Partnerin, die sich wie selbstverständlich auf das Abenteuer einzulassen weiß: Wie rettet man einen Verzweifelten? – Alle Kinder erfahren die Wirkung, die von ihnen ausgeht, und sie sind dankbar und glücklich. Nicht viele wissen, warum! Das möchten die zwei Film-Dramen ausbreiten und vor Augen führen.

Dieser Film verdient zurecht das Wort eines Klassikers. Schöner zeitloser Klassiker den man immer wieder sehen kann. Tom Hanks und Meg Ryan in Bestform, auch wenn sie hier eigentlich nur gegen Ende gemeinsam vor der Kamera stehen. Die Story aber ist wirklich Herzerwärmend.Der perfekte Film mit seinem Schatz an einem verregnetem Abend.
