Terrific watch for kids!
OMG I did not know how great a gift this was going to be. Do buy the 2nd generation or beyond watch. Definitely look at this watch from a child's eyes and not from adult perspective as I think some reviewers have done. Also consider the price - the apps on this watch are not going to compete with a device like a tablet where you have so much more money invested. For the type product it is, the market it is made for and ultimately the low price you get it for - this watch is a great product. Once my 6 year old granddaughter showed me all the things this watch does, I thought "what a great price!" She can take pretty good quality pictures and video - not as good as our smart phones, but good enough for a kid! It is pretty easy to do the video - so watch what you say! They can be uploaded to the computer or tablet. There are many many video effects, audio effects - yes it has good audio recording along with the video. My granddaughter can use these effects to jazz up her photos and videos - which backgrounds etc. There are several games, time keeping - a game to teach time keeping, a motion sensor and game. It can be a stop watch, an alarm, a calendar. Oh, did I say calculator? I am sure I am not listing all the things this watch does. In a very easy, intuitive, kid friendly, graphical interface - she put the watch on an immediately was able to move pretty easily through all the functions. No instructions needed! I am a software engineer and I love products that work the way this watch does. There is a USB port for charging - and it can use the universal USB micro cables we use in the house for other devices, although it does come with its own cable in the package to charge the rechargeable Lithium Ion battery. They say it is for ages 4-9, but my grandson picked it up and started using it very easily - I would say any child age 3 and up if they are used to technology, use a tablet or your phone to play with they can use this watch! Some two year- olds depending on their intelligence. Great product for a very reasonable price. Kuddos and applause to the designers. The one problem I see is that you will need to set some clear rules about this watch and taking it to school.

Died after a year
We had the watch for about a year. My daughter liked it and wanted it for Christmas because her best friend had it. She did not find it very interesting. She was 4 and struggled to understand how to fully use it. She found some games she played a couple times and the camera, but other than that, she lost interest pretty quick. I will say my daughter did not take the best care of it, but nothing I felt that would warrant it to just completely stop working. We tried resetting and nothing. It will not charge or anything anymore.

Daughter loves this watch even more than I expected!
This year, we bought both of our daughters "Smartwatch" type devices for Christmas. For our younger daughter (3) we bought the LeapFrog LeapBand Activity Tracker, Pink and for our older daughter (9) we bought this Kidizoom DX. After comparing them both, I absolutely should have just bought two of these. My daughter loves it even more than I was expecting. The build quality seems great, the battery has so far been lasting all day (she charges it overnight) and the interface is extremely easy to understand and navigate. She likes all the different watch faces and loves to track how much she's moved during the day (I especially like that she can start the pedometer and set a goal and then leave it running in the background while she uses other features of the watch). The included games are simplistic but I didn't expect anything super fancy...she plays them in the car or whatever...just to kill time every now and then. Unlike the LeapBand, this watch didn't require us to first download any software to our computer and sync it...it worked right out of the box. Once the Vtech store is back online, it'll be interesting to see what downloadable content is available but even if there wasn't anything...we'd still be happy with the watch as is. My only complaint or feature request would be that I wish there was the option to disable the camera button on the side of the watch. She's already had an issue where she bends her wrist in such a way that she hits that button, then every time the screen gets touched it takes a picture...so she ends up having to delete tons of photos of her coat, or walls, or the floor...that kind of thing. Not really that big of a deal but I wish I could just turn that button off.

Definitely for Younger Kids, Low-quality Graphics
The watch is sturdy and probably most appropriate for kids aged 5-7. Children younger than 5 (and maybe even some 5 yr olds) might find it difficult to navigate. Children older than 7 will most likely become bored with it after minimal use.We got this as a gift for our 9 yr old. He really wanted an Apple watch but there's obviously no way he was getting one of those. After looking at a handful of "smart" watches for kids, I decided on this one because it has pretty good ratings. It takes pictures, records your voice, functions as a pedometer, acts as a stopwatch, etc. You can also plug it into a computer and upload games from the VTech site. The problem with it is the graphics are low quality and it's just way too kiddish in my opinion. My son explored the watch and all it's functions for about a week, then he asked to upload some new games. So we set up an account online, plugged his watch into my laptop and checked out the available games. Unfortunately, there weren't very many that interested him. So in the end, this watch got about a week of quality attention, and now it's sitting in its case on my son's dresser.
