Great entry level kit!
I bought this 2 stone (4 grit) set as my first venture into using whetstones. I’ve previously maintained straight razors, so I understand the concept of putting an edge on steel. I would consider this set to be a very good beginner set of whetstones. You can put a very good edge on a knife with them. In my first afternoon, I sharpened three paring knives, two 8” chefs knives and 2 blades on an old Swiss Army knife. On all but one chef knife, I had to reset the bevel using the 400 grit. The other chef knife (a Henkel) had a small chip so I had to remove a good bit of material to get a clean edge. None got “straight razor” sharp, but none of then are straight razors either. All are perfectly capable of handling kitchen duty, better than they have in years. About the set itself: The stones are decent sized and are as advertised. They came reasonably flat, but after soaking, I used the fixer stone to get them completely flat, plus chamfer off the edges so as not to get snagged by a blade. They seem fairly soft, and can gouge fairly easily, but I have no frame of reference since these are my first whetstones. This is probably undesirable normally, but for a beginner, that kind of instant feedback on your technique is useful, IMO. If you listen to the sound of each stroke, you can tell when you’re getting it right. Keep rewetting them as you work. The white 8000 grit stone seemed to load up on metal quickly. The silicone rubber holders hold the stones well and fit inside the bamboo base nicely. I like the base more than I expected. So, bottom line, as a beginner set of whetstones, these get a 5. This does NOT mean they’re on par with the more expensive stones, and that’s okay. Starting with no experience but with a little understanding of the process, I was able to put good, functional edges on several knives. Were they perfect? Heck no! But that’s more due to my inexperience than the stones. I’ve got a lot to learn and skills to develop before the stones become the limiting factor. With practice and a good strop, and the right blades, I’m sure these stones can put a “scary sharp” edge on a knife. So far, I’d say they’re a good value. I’ll get the rest of my kitchen knives done this weekend.

Great value starter kit!
I never tried sharpening any knife with whetstones before. I bought these because I had several old knives sitting in a drawer that were terribly dull and I was bored during the stay at home orders and wanted to try something new. These stones seemed pretty good for my first try. The rubber holder and the bamboo base are very stable. The chef's knife I tried first had several bad chips in the blade and I started with the 400 grit stone and used all the different stones to get a pretty good sharp blade. I was please how well it got the chips out. I wasn't able to get it absolutely razor sharp but I think that's just my novice skills. I tried it on a smaller knife starting with the 1000 grit which also came out pretty well. It does take a good while especially on badly dulled blades to fix the issues, build up the edge with the different stones and get used to the technique. The stone shaper tool came in handy to even out the stones after lots of sharpening and works very well. Overall great kit at a great price!

Good stone set
The stones got here on time and were well packaged. Each printed grit seems accurate, and they fit well with the base. Definitely not much in the way of information, you will need to learn how to use a whetstone through other guides if you don't know already. Did a fantastic job on both pocket and kitchen knives in a variety of stainless steels (440c, 420, etc.). My only concern is that the 400 grit seemed to lose a lot of material (a fine dust like particle in the water that was blue like the stone, not grey knife metal) suggesting these stones may not have the longest lifespan which is the reason for four stars. Still, for the price, definitely worthwhile.

Wow have to say works pretty darn good
I have been sharping knifes for over 40 yrs with oil stones and diamond stones mostly and I must say water stones work nicely. I have not had this long but decided to try them out and didnt want to spend a lot of money on them.they work very well resharpened all my kitchen knifes and my chisels. Must say it does work a lot faster than oil for all processes of sharpening. As for diamond no, i still like my 325 grit dmt for fast profiling 600 grit for edging the knife and 1200 for good sharping of knife and finishing off with a arkansas 25 year old hard stone, but add the 8000 wet stone for polishing very nice. Now for kitchen knifes I can see me using this much more often with a wider blade. I am now teaching my son to sharpen knifes and this is a very good set for him and i to use and much easier to use than the oil stones. I love my oil stones but you must learn to use them. water stones are way easier to use and understand

Durable, Creates Sharp Edges, and Worth the Money
I bought this whetstone set primarily to prepare and sharpen my mortise chisels. After putting a flat edge on the bottom of the chisels and then sharpening the edges of all of them, these stones did a fantastic job! All of my chisels now have a flat heel and they were razor sharp; none of the stones showed any sign of gouging or excess wear and are perfectly serviceable. The bamboo base held to the table without any slipping and the rubber boots for the stones held the stones in the base snuggly. I have not used the flattening stone, leather strop, compound, or sharpening guide but are nice to have in the event that I need them, may put my EDC knives on it to give them as sharp of an edge as my chisels. Overall, a very solid whetstone set for a great price!

Great, affordable set of stones
Amazon dropped these off right when were about to start a movie, so I spent the next couple of hours sharpening 4 of my knives. All but one of them was in fairly good shape, but needed a sharpening. The 4th knife, however, which is my gf's neglected, abused Calphalon santoku, was pretty rough. Nicks and dings in the edge, and overall in lousy shape. Bottom line is that I was able to use the 400 stone with that santoku and restore a nice, chip-free edge and get the whole thing back to razor sharp. I took all of the knives up to 8000 and I'm looking forward to putting them through their paces in the kitchen. I found these stones easier to use and faster than using the diamond steels that I have and for the price, they've already paid for just a single sharpening at the local knife guy.

Great for a beginner like me.
These stones are perfect for someone like me who is just starting out learning how to sharpen my knives properly. The quality of the stones is solid and durable and they have had no problems getting my knives sharp. I have been practicing on some old knives that haven't been sharpened in years and these stones really brought back their new edge sharpness. I gave these a 4/5 because a small part of my 400/1000 stone chipped off. Could be a part of the quality or my improper motions as I am just starting out. Overall, I would buy these again if I am still practicing and wear out the ones I have.

TMI. Great price but for a little more I think you get a lot more value in other products.
Five stars because of the value and razor sharp knives. That being said, I have lots of complaints. I have the Norton combo stone package that is exactly like this one and it sharpens 2 to 3 times faster with less wear on the stones and the stones are 8 inches Versus 7 inch for these. The Norton did cost $149 so I still can’t complain too much about the these stones. The Norton will polish to a mirror finish, these will not But I think the mirror finish is overrated. Because of this I am assuming the 8000 is actually more like a 2000 and the 3000 is a 1200 and the 1000 is probably close to 1000 and the 400 is more like seven or 800 and doesn’t do quick work at all. The good part about this is that all of the stones will makeRazor sharp knives that work perfectly well. I don’t bother switching stone grit because they all work about the same. But again I am happy with the results it’s just takes twice as long. If you don’t mind spending the extra money I would get the Norton or the king 1000 6000 combo stone is less than $50 and probably the best value of the three but does not come with flattening stone or holder. A damp towel works great as a holder and there are a lot of ways to flatten Stones cheaply. I use the DMT diamond plate that I also use to sharpen pocket knives and tools. I also used it to flatten the flattening stone that came with this product so I would check yours before I use it. By the way, Norton is an American company but the stones are made in Mexico. King stones are made in Japan and this product of course is made in China. I also think that all of these Chinese stones with the bamboo base are identical even if the colors are different because reading other reviews the 3000 side does wear down incredibly quickly. You see that comment a lot on one star reviews. I would estimate 10 to 15 sharpenings and maybe 30 sharpenings on the 8000 side. The 400/1000 I have not noticed any wear on and have sharpened six knives so far On each side.

Perfect gift for beginners.
Purchased for my kid’s dad, who has a fancy handmade knife that was in dire need of sharpening. After a lot of research and comparison, I chose this set because it included everything needed to get started and the price was very reasonable. It did not disappoint! The packaging gives it a very quality feel, I was able to just plop the whole box in a bag with some tissue paper and a card and the unboxing was still impressive, you can tell a lot of attention went into the presentation of this item. The recipient told me it took a while to get the hang of it (as someone who sharpens tools, that will be true with any sharpening kit) but his knife is much sharper now, so overall mission accomplished.

does exactly what it's supposed to do
i like this kit. I've owned many sharpening kit, stones and devices over the years. I started with an old Buck stone kit, one double sided stone and a smaller one which was finer grit. it was o.k but, frankly, I lacked the skills and knowledge to get great results. I then switched to a Lansky sharpening kit. Easy to operate, I used it for decades and still use it from time to time. But the Lansky is not built to sharpen oversized knife, like a Japanese cleaver and the angle setting stop at 17 degrees, which is not quite the 14-15 degrees required for Japanese chef's knives. Now that I have more experience and more expensive knives, i figured I'd go back to the basic and try whetstones again. On my first try, i took an old german knife that i thought ruined, (a little too agressive on my steel...and the wine lol). After about 45 minutes, i know, it sounds like a long time but, first time and very dull knife...I got it sca-ry sharp. ONE THING BEFORE USING FOR THE FIRST TIME ! make sure to run your fingers along ALL the edges of ALL your stones to be certain there is no burr and, run the flattening stone on each edges, at a roughly 45 degree angle. To conclude, I do strongly recommend this kit but I also strongly suggest for a beginner, to watch a good sharpening video because there is very little instruction with this kit. Enjoy

Good starter set
Great value for the money, and great starter set. Stones have good range of grit, and the stone maintenance tools included are helpful. I work as a prep cook in a busy kitchen, so these are getting used at least once a week to keep my knives where they need to be. Takes some getting used to for angles to be right, but does the job if you are patient. Soaking time is a little erratic at times, often needs longer than 5 minutes to be ready to use, but overall quite happy with my purchase.

a good set
this is a good set for those looking to start a set of stones. it has everything you will need for most applications. i found i had to give the stones a little bit of truing with the flattening stone first, but after a little polish and a good soak in a sink, the stones did a wonderful job of correcting my kitchen knives. i would reccomend finding a strop to replace the one that comes with the kit, however. i am used to sharpening a straight shaving blade, and the strop that came with this kit feels like it is low quality, and worse, isn't easy to keep centered on a hook like most bathrooms or kitchens would likely have them hanging from. good strops aren't that expensive though, and unless you need a razor sharpness, this strop works well enough. if you do need razor sharpness, i would reccomend getting a 10,000 grit whetstone and a good strop to supplement this kit. i have both of those, and i am very pleased of the results. shaving is now so much smoother and more comfortable from having a properly set angle and polish to my blade. full reccomendation to this set!

Nice kit to sharpen knives and tools
I watched several YouTube videos on how to sharpen knives with Whetstones, seemed simple enough... well, it’s definitely an art, not as easy as it seems. Nonetheless, I kept at it and managed to get a decent sharpness on a few large kitchen knives. The smaller the knife the easier and quicker it was to sharpen. I even used it on a small axe and did a decent job. Then I had to use the grey ‘brick’ to level the stones back to flat. There are no Instructions for the honing leather strap and ‘wax’ so I had to Google that too. Overall, I’m happy with the kit for the price. It definitely takes lots of practice to sharpen knives properly and I’m nowhere near that level of skill yet, but this kit will help get me there.
