The Great Gatsby: The Graphic Novel

Like everyone has already said, what a beautifully illustrated book while still celebrating the original. Definitely makes me want to invest in other graphic novels in the future.

Bought for my high school classroom.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read unless you are already familiar with this book and you are previewing it perhaps for a younger reader. ——— Some stuff was omitted. Perhaps the adapter/illustrator didn’t feel it was vital? I’ll speak on 2 chapters. In Ch 2, a scene was rightfully included and that part is vital in understanding Tom Buchanan’s character, where he busts Myrtle in the nose, used-to-getting-his-way-all-the-time, abusive, arrogant, hot-headed Tom. It is very relevant. However, a complete scene from Ch 7 is nowhere to be found and that had as much relevance in understanding the ending and a final thought on a couple of the characters eh-hmmm. Why was that scene not included??? This is the scene where Daisy runs Myrtle over because she can’t control herself and is full of making bad decisions after bad decisions. They continue on to Gatsby’s place to figure out how to handle a completely mishandled situation. I did read it was mentioned when talking to Nick but I felt it would have been better understood if perhaps you included a couple visuals. Maybe a distant driver (Daisy) so consumed by the events of the evening that she looks wreckless AND BEHIND THE WHEEL. She was driving. That needs to be included. It’s so easy for a reader only to see visuals to think one way or the other, but she was distraught and she was guilty. That part is key in understanding Daisy. She basically walks away unscathed, pretty much sums up her life, outside of being locked up in lifeless marriage where her husband forever cheats on her from beginning till end. Sure it’s a fast moving spiral of events unfolding, but her recklessness caused two deaths. She and Tom and their money just move along as if nothing ever happened. I love books and I love reading. I did like this graphic novel adaptation. I almost gave this a 4-star because of that one missing visual scene. It’s vital since you literally painted a picture. If you can include Myrtle’s nose, the murder of Gatsby, then a suicide...why leave out visuals of Daisy driving?

This graphic novel brought the book alive. It focused on two objects that had a big importance to the story: the green light and Dr. T. J. Eckleburgs glasses. I remember studying what these two things might mean in high school, and I get it now.Despite how rich Gatsby was and how glamorous his parties were, only four people went to his funeral. Not even Daisy went. The big idea I got from it is that money doesn't buy friends. Gatsby was trying to impress Daisy, but it never worked. This story took place in the 1920's, and majority of people's money will be gone 10 years later during the Great Depression.This graphic novel was dense. It contained a ton of information, and it was enjoyable. Highly recommend reading this graphic novel.

I love the way this was illustrated. I felt like the dialogue was awkward the first few chapters, but then I found it to be pretty perfect.

The font is too tiny, practically illegible. The best manga and the best graphic novel have large easy to read font. Yet. I am giving this book a five star rating. The artwork is simply gorgeous! And the adaption, brilliant. I loved this story as a young person in school. I loved this graphic novel as an adult.

Beautifully illustrated and written book. I bought it for my niece and nephew, whom are both graphic novel fans. But I also enjoyed reading it. The illustrations are extraordinarily beautiful and add so much to the enjoyment of this novel. I want to re-read the complete novel now!

Fitzgerald is obviously in the pantheon of all-time greats. It should be noted that Aya Morton is an American master in her own right. She is a national treasure. What a fabulous collaboration.I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with this wonderful book.
