Le top de la syntaxe minimaliste. Des démonstrations vraiment scientifiques quant à la structure de la phrase anglaise. Superbe magnifiquement relié. Un peu cher toutefois.

初版（2009）以来17年ぶりの全面改訂版である。総頁も542頁から579頁に増え重量感が増した。本書は生成文法の書であるが、詳細な理論記述を追うことを別にすれば、生成文法の基礎知識、というより英語学の基礎知識さえあれば、英語のさまざまな統語現象が理解できるよう工夫されている。たとえば、Null C in infinitive clausesは、C=complementiser (補文標識）ということが分かっていれば「不定詞節における補文標識ゼロ構文」ということがわかる。*More than anything, she wanted for him to apologize.More than anything else, he wanted him to apologize.She wanted more than anything for him to apologize.*She wanted more than anything him to apologize.補文句（CP=complement phrase）が動詞のすぐ後に生起していれば、補文標識（for）はゼロ、動詞の後に修飾語句が入って補文句が動詞と分離されると補文標識が必要ということである（pp,207-210）(もっともこの指摘自体ははRosenbaum( 19679)にさかのぼる）。補文という言葉は使えないが、これは学習英和辞典にあってもよい情報だろう。現在はコーパス全盛の時代であるが、これだけのことをコーパスデータから帰納するのは不可能でないにしても大変な時間と労力がかかるだろう。もう一例あげよう。He decided not to cooperate with the police.He decided to not cooperate with the policeたいていの文法書, 辞書には「最近はnot to…　の代わりにto not… も用いられる」という程度の言及はあるが。本書によるとto not…の方がnot to…　よりも「もっと意図的な反抗行為(a much more deliberate act of defiance)」を含意するという(pp.281-82)。などなど。評者のように生成文法を専門にしていない者にも英語の統語現象についていろいろ興味深い情報が得られる書である。
