Island of the Blue Dolphins

Haunting and Beautiful
I remember reading this book when I was much younger. And I don't know that it hit me the same when I was younger as it did now.The book was beautiful. It was amazing how a book with one character and mostly only animals to socialize with could hit so hard. The character was very strong to live by herself for so many years. The things she was able to do and accomplish was impressive.I would recommend this story.

This book was great!!!
This was a 10/10 read for me, I loved that it was centered around a strong, resourceful, and confident girl. This book showed how humans can interact with nature and get along with it. I definitely recommend this book!

Good book but the times were confusing (written by a 12 year old)
"Island of the Blue Dolphins" has dolphins, dogs, sea otters, and so many other animals. The book starts as a nice community on an island, but the Aluets caused trouble and killed the chief. The new chief went to get help. Help came and got all the people except Karana and her brother. Soon only Karana was on the island by herself. She felt very lonely, so she made friends with the animals, specifically her dog and his son. The Aleuts come again, but Karana is prepared. Karana faces several challenges, but she made a lot of good memories and friends on the island.I like the book, but the time can be confusing. Often Karana used words such as "many moons after spring" or "two suns after the Aluets came." It is good for strong readers or kids about 11-13 years old. Overall a good book just a little hard to read. (Review by a 12 year old)

Great story book for older children and adults.
I recently bought and read this book based on a real person. It was read to our 5th grade class by our teacher back in the 60s. Great survival story but has sadness too.

Good read for my girls!!
As a dad, I wanted something more substantial to read to my kids before bed. I wanted something in the vein of "Hatchet", or "My side of the moutain", which I loved as a young boy.I needed something more relatable to my girls however, and after racking my brain I remembered this gem, and was so glad I did. It's a great book, no doubt. But the better part for me was the additional learning we did to understand some of the words in the context. What is an abalone? What would a cormorant feather dress look like? The devil fish sounds like an animal we know!!! What is it??My girls, 4 and 8, each took their own lessons away from this book, and I have no doubt it's something that will stick with them as they grow into young women.
