Very good all around mid-level + receiver. Bugs in Airplay and remote app.
I've been into audio since I was a child. I've loved my Harman Kardon 435 AVR but over the years the technology has surpassed it so after hearing many rave reviews of the previous 2012 model I decided to give this new 2013 model Denon 2113CI a go.I've had it a few days now and here are my thoughts so far on it.- The sound is comparable to my old Harman Kardon which I'm happy about, and the settings and menus are much easier to use that older receiver menus, plus it has all of the newest modes like DTS-HD Master Audio for Blu-Ray and most ever other mode you can think of (excluding THX).Positives:1) Great sound2) Easy to use remote (aka even my wife can run it)3) Can be controlled via iPhone/iPad (Word of advice, if you want this feature buy the DeRemote app, the free Denon one is junk.)4) Apple Airplay5) 2 Zone amplified6) Powerful soundNegatives:1) Buggy Apple Airplay1a) If you switch off airplay on the main zone you cannot go back without stopping the song on the Apple Remote App and starting it up again.1b) BUG: The manual says your receiver uses the volume in the Apple Remote App, this is true, however there is a bug! If zone 1 is on something else, say Blu-Ray, and zone 2 is on Airplay the Apple Remote App jacks the sound in Zone 1 so you try to turn up the Airplay in Zone 2 and instead turn up the Blu-Ray in zone 1. Hopefully Denon will fix this, this should only control the volume of the zone using Airplay. (I have the latest firmware as of 5/25/2012) Also be careful turning it on, if you last listened to your iTunes on a high level you could blow a speaker as your amp will now have that level.1c) There is no dedicated Airplay button so there is no way to get back to it if you change zones even though Airplay keeps playing on your iTunes.... The network button works for zone 2 on this if zone 1 is playing Airplay, but the Network button does not work for zone 1, you have to restart everything to get it playing again.1d) You cannot go directly to playing Airplay on zone 2, you have to hijack zone 1 and then it will play on zone 2, then you can turn zone 1 back to what you were watching/listening to. Annoying if you are say watching a movie on zone 1 in the living room and want to listen to music on zone 2 in the rest of the house.1e) Very primitive control of Airplay via the receiver, it's a joke really. You basically have to use Apple's Remote App to make it work properly.2) Denon iPad/iPhone app is a complete joke and full of bugs.3) HDMI you CANNOT use any HDMI source in zone 2. I didn't realize this prior to buying. There is a work around I've found, you connect HDMI and RCA cables to the source and this works ok however the following occur.3a) Zone 2 is slightly ahead of the HDMI source even if you turn off all the processing and go straight stereo (this aforementioned helps but doesn't fix the problem).3b) Not all things have RCA and HDMI, take for instance my Blu-Ray. It has only an HDMI so you CANNOT hear it in the other zones. This may or may not be a deal killer for you...Would I buy it again? I'm up in the air on this, and time will tell. Hopefully Denon will release future firmware updates that fix the problems I've mentioned. Overall I'd say it's a very good receiver but make sure you can live with 1) the buggy Apple Airplay and 2) that HDMI sources cannot be played in zone 2 (see work-around above).

Amazing Home Theater Option For The "Average Joe"
I'm someone who's pretty picky about audio/video. Being a(n) artist/designer, I recognize good aesthetics. Being an "audiophile," I enjoy balanced acoustics with some "thumpin'" bass. However, I'll admit that I'm farrrrrr from a guru when it comes to understanding all the tech specs and nitty gritty that makes a good system work. I just know it when I see it (or hear it)! That said, I researched quite a bit before landing on this particular receiver (and a speaker system to match). My review is ideal for those "average Joes" out there that want a rockstar setup without having to understand anything or rely on some pro to guide you through setup and use. Plus, the system doesn't break the bank!It should be noted that this system was technically for my parents. They were long overdue for a "nice" TV, so my sis and I wanted to upgrade them! (It's the gift that keeps on giving, ya know?). They didn't need anything *too* fancy, but we didn't want to skimp and get them something "cheap" that wouldn't expand to their needs over time. This system seemed to offer the best balance, and I've loved using it with them. The model offers many contemporary features (including an iOS app remote, AirPlay, Internet radio support, etc...). It has the perfect number of ports and connectivity options. It's intuitive and very easy to use. (If my dad can master it, so can you! ;] ). The system has some great convenience features, like various front-access ports and the ability to digitally label the channels (e.g. the HDMI port that hosts the AppleTV comes up as "AppleTV" when my parents select that channel). Forget generic and hard to remember labels, like "HDMI 1," "CD 3," "VGA 1," etc...Since I don't understand the tech spec magic myself, I'm not going to waste much time talking about that stuff (i.e. "8ohm 20-20kHz 0.08%... this" and "fully discrete power... that" mean nothing to me). I gave you the back-story, so you know what I was looking for. If it sounds like you (i.e. a simpleton wanting a rockin' system, or a "parent" just needing a nice home theater), then check this system out. The key "general" things I'll add are:- Its fancy "Audyssey MultEQ" setup tool really IS fancy. You don't have to know a thing about audio, and it'll use a microphone system to detect your speaker arrangement and help you dial in the "perfect" settings.- The remote is simple. The iOS app isn't. (Don't waste time with the app right now. It's a novelty that Denon will hopefully improve over time.)- This system handles all the "high def" and quality-related things you need (1080P, 5.1, bass support, etc...)- You can pretty much hook anything IN and anything OUT. The perfect amount (and arrangement) of ports for the average person.- The unit looks sharp.- It's quiet, sturdy, and doesn't overheat. The final thing I'll offer to readers is some of the equipment I purchased to pair with this system. Unfortunately, Amazon doesn't offer product-linking in reviews anymore, so all I can do is provide the exact titles of items. They're all purchased from Amazon; all of equal quality to this receiver. (Hopefully I'll find time to provide reviews on them as well, but know that they're all solid overall!)-------Energy 5.1 Take Classic Home Theater System (Set of Six, Black)-- (By far, the best speaker system I read up on for the "average joe.")-------Sceptre X408BV-FHD 39-Inch 1080p 60HZ LCD HDTV (Black)-- (In hindsight, I'd probably go bigger, but this is a good TV in regards to quality. Definitely nice bang for your buck!)-------VideoSecu LCD LED TV Wall Mount Full Motion with Swivel Articulating Arm for 23-37 in, up to 42 in TV Monitor Flat Panel Screen With VESA 200 100, 20-- (Sturdy wall-mount for those of you interested in doing away with the old entertainment "closet" setup.)-------Aurum Ultra Series High Speed HDMI Cable (35 feet) - CL3 Rated for In-wall Installation - Supports 3D, Ethernet and Audio Return [Newest Version] - 35-- (Great cable to cover some serious ground. I ran this up through the drop-ceiling in the basement.)-------Mediabridge CYA-1M2F-P Ultra Series - RCA Y Adapter - 1-Male to 2-Female for Digital Audio or Subwoofer-- (Helpful splitter to take advantage of the stereo input on the sub.)-------AmazonBasics HDMI Male to Female Swivel Adapter-- (Handy adapters for a more versatile setup in your home.)
