Can it stand on its own without being against the wall?

Yes, but on hard surfaces. Ours is on carpet and he stands okay but he has tilted a couple times so I just sit him next to the wall. The kids love him.

What is the material?

It's some time of foam. A durable foam, though :) we've had ours almost a year and it still looks brand new.

This plastic bowl which came with Ewok is like the one you get for take out salad from a restaurant. Is this right?

Little bigger but on that idea. It's clear plastic and sturdy (my 10 month old granddaughter kept trying to play with it)

It's absolutely strong enough to hang on the wall. It's a pretty hard plastic feel to it. I love my Yoda. He sits in my entry way.
