Redesigned but not better.
The old breather tube design was frail and used to get clogged easily. It used a fine plastic mesh and was much smaller in size. What happens when it clogs entirely you may wonder? In my DEL60, the manifold cracks along the top section, allowing dirty water and DE to pass through the filter and out into the pool. I've had 3 manifolds fail in exactly the same way in the past 2 years. The breather tube relieves over-pressure in the manifold, so it's important to not have it clog up with debris. This design looks far superior over the old. Some may be concerned by the coarseness of the metal mesh. While it does look surprisingly coarse, nevertheless it does not allow DE to escape in any noticeable quantity. I'll update this.Sept 2020 update. The redesign did not prevent manifold cracking. I’ve since used an aftermarket manifold design that you commonly see sold on Amazon in white plastic. It’s already lasted far longer and has yet to fail after more than 1 season. You will not need this breather tube for the aftermarket manifold. I suggest you go with the non OEM aftermarket instead. They’ve fixed the problem that the manufacturer apparently cannot.

Big improvement over previous version (with one fix)
Big improvement over previous (and cheaply made) version. Has a nice big metal screen attached to a heavy duty rubber body that should hold up well and be less inclined to get plugged up. Only issue, as one reviewer previously noted, it that the whole filter can slip off the plastic tube with very little effort (I pulled it off just trying to get it out of the bag). The fix is to glue the filter to the tube using some kind of adhesive. I used 3M weatherstripping adhesive, that stuff holds up for years. Even if you just use some silicone caulking, that should do the job.

Read the reviews. Best to add some silicon adhesive to filter screen top
As others have written, the filter screen top fits loosely on the plastic tube. I removed it and applied a small amount of silicon adhesive to (hopefully!) prevent it from popping off and finding its way into the depths of the filter system.

Not as picture - but looks to be a better design.
Looks like Jandy upgraded the design on this. The packaging was the same, but the presumably older design has been replaced by a newer design which looks stronger. It has a nice steel mesh cover, and not the nylon mesh w/ flimsy plastic that was on the old ones. Not sure how the old ones lasted as mine needed replacing when I bought my house back in October. That said, this one seems to be holding up fine, and I have high confidence in it lasting a long time.
