It measures not quite 23 inches.

Q: The description says this hat is straw and made of cotton. how was the upf rating of 50+ achieved?

I bought this hat, it is well made and a closely knit straw/cotton with a 6 inch brim all around (measured from the tip of the hat to the beginning of the bowl of the hat - where your head fits). I can only suggest that these it may protect from the sun.

Q: How do you fold the hat without causing damage?

The hat is very pliable, so you can fold it in half, then roll it up without causing any damage or misshaping to it.

Q: What shade of red is the watermelon red? Does it actually look red?

Not red at all. Pink - not quiet hot pink. More like fuscia.
