Risky but can work
I got this chanter originally because I wasn't sure I could commit to the instrument and the costs it would entail, and initially I struggled to get any good tune out of it and my teacher told me that it sucked and to get a McCallum chanter. I ended up doing that and thought I'd try the reed from that in this chanter and it actually sounded really really good, better than the McCallum one in fact. So I'd say if you get this, don't use the reed that it comes with. Buy a higher quality reed (it is still only like $10), and for only like $20, you'll have a chanter that sounds just as good as something that costs $100.

Quick and easy fix
Saw a bunch of people complaining about the quality and all that, for that extremely low price it's EXTREMELY fair! Not just that, but the seller is attentive and prompt if there is an issue. Perfect for just something to keep your fingers going. Signed: grade 4 piper!!!

It's a movie prop!
I own two chanters, and a bagpipe. I bought this just to see if it would work as a low-cost practice chanter, something I could loan out or take with me and not worry if it got broken or stolen. If someone stole this, they would bring it back!Let's start with the reed. The reed supplied would not work. I put it in my RG Hardy Chanter (One of the best made) and it still made horrible squeaking sounds. I tried to tune the reed, but it never worked right. "High-quality plastic reed, perfectly match with finger tips SUPERIOR QUALITY" It says in perfect chinglish. Indeed! There is NOTHING high-quality nor perfectly match (whatever that means) about the reed. It's trash. Period. Now on to the chanter itself...Oh good lord....This chanter is so cheaply made, I would say that it qualifies as a child's toy chanter or a movie prop. The holes are wrong. The bore diameter is wrong. The seat for the reed is wrong. It's made so poorly, it will not even fit on my bagpipe. If you take most practice chanters apart, the blowpipe and chanter will usually fit on a set of pipes. This one was so off dimensionally, that it was in the realm of proprietary. Why? Probably because when I put a good Warnock reed in it, and wrapped enough hemp around the chanter to get it to fit my smallpipes...just to see what would happen, it sounded like someone violently murdering a goose with a dog toy. Only two sounds showed up as actual notes on a tuner. What in the name of Robert Burns is this thing? It's not a real, "palyable" practice chanter. Maybe if you hot-glue the blowpipe and chanter, along with some stained dowels to a bag made of plaid fabric, you could use it as a non-functional prop in a movie or play. It would work well for that. If you need a practice chanter...look elsewhere. This is not the chanter you are looking for. Move along.

A "YOU'LL DO!" chanter
First a disclaimer, I'm a professional-level piper, reedmaker, and turner. I got one of these to use for a demo chanter for prospective students. I knew that it wasn't going to play well, but I also have reamers, lathes, etc. at my disposal to make the chanter better. I countersunk the holes, reamed the bore to a better size, increased the ID of the bore of the top of the chanter where the mouthpiece connects, and oiled it to add some density to the wood. After letting it dry, I rehemped it, opened the ID of the reed seat with a reamer, and put one of my reeds that I made in. It actually played respectably after that. That said, this is NOT for a beginner unless some work is done to it. Even then, it will only last so long unless you really baby it. I also don't recommend making modifications on your own. Work with a skilled piper (if one has the patience for such a project) and make sure that any adjustment is incremental. But is it worth it? For me, it was fine because I knew what I was getting. However, for those of you that are just starting out, you're better off to keep looking for a better option, like Hardie, McCallum, or Dunbar.

Don't Waste Your Money On This Chanter!
I can't believe I didn't read your reviews before I bought my first Chanter. It does not separate so I can't clean the Chanter or dry out the reed. I'm so angry right now because I spent $41 on this worthless piece of cheap material. Worldof USA should be embarrassed. Do not waste your time with this company.
