Does the portal support other games and figuriens like skylander?

It's compatible with all infinity figures (it doesn't matter what console you use they all use the same figures), in the case of the portal is designed ONLY for the console specifed in the box (in this case Wii U). Perhaps you should wait for the upcoming new version of infinity 2.0 because it will be backwards compatible with all infinity 1.0 figures and of course the upcoming new set of figures.

I have the disney infinity for the Wii.Would I need to get a new infinity for the wii u?

We went through 2 games for our grandkids - they were both defective. Disney admitted they released it too quickly without proper R&D. However, this was Christmas time and they may have worked the bugs out by now. We replaced it with Super Mario cart - the grandkids love it... If you get the Infinity Wii U - keep the receipt & box, you may be sending it back for refund/replacement!

is this version anything like the 3DS version?

The way 3DS games are designed, there are variations when it comes to how they are on a TV (via xbox, playstation or wii), so I imagine there will some differences in graphics. The story line will be the same though, as they are the same game.
