Great for very beginning readers
This is a good choice for beginning readers who have mastered most basic phonics rules and are looking to read some sort of nonfiction. I consider a book like this to be a reading exercise first, facts second. In that sense it generally succeeds. I am not a phonics expert, but the rule by which Japanese loanwords like "sushi, Fuji origami" have a long vowel sound of e at the end is probably something that would need to be mentioned.Otherwise I think it's fine for a 3-5 year old reader. I would have liked a few more pages just showing pictures of modern Japanese in Tokyo and other places going about their usual lives, but whatever. Someone looking to have their young child read a bit about Japan probably should look for a more sophisticated book.

Very basic
We returned the item but probably fine if you have a beginner reader. Any child over 4 years old will find this boring.
