Until recently I didn't know this series. I knew Rick Veitch (loved the Army@War series - I'm still wondering why it was canceled???) and read about his twisted vision of super-heroes and sidekicks from the '90s in a forum and decided to try it...Was it worth it? HECK, YA!!! It's the best series I've seen in a looooooooong time...The argument is fantastic and, although it was originally published in 1991/2, it's still original and has a strong story presented with the competent art of Rick Veitch. It's a b/w book, but this doesn't hinder the story one bit.The story is about the "heroes" and their sidekicks in the town of Slumburg - this isn't a dark reflection of Superman's Metropolis or even a darker Gotham City, it's far worse... it's a playground for a group of "super-heroes" who - except for the costumes - don't have nothing of heroic. They are a bunch of bastards who only care about their image and their royalties. The sidekicks are just a means to up the profits of their comics and toys.So, - spoiler alert -they blow them up every now and again to bring new blood to their properties. The life of the sidekicks is full of dangers, mainly brought on by their "senior partners".After reading "Brat Pack" I realized that it must have been the template for "The Boys" series by Garth Ennis, so, if you love "The Boys", you'll love this series. This is the world of "The Boys" without Butcher & Cª, but with the same sadistic, crazy, bastard "heroes". They even mention a kind of herogasm event...

This is a great read, and really made me laugh aloud at times...It is a satire of the whole side-kick phenominon throughout comic books...  and really holds no punches.If you like the more adult titles of today, or the Moore books of yesterday, then by all means give this a read....  and if you like this, then I would also read Maximortal.
