Great addition to the genre
I've read most of the outlaw biker memoirs and most follow the same format, starting with childhood memories to establish what forged their characters, and ending with their retirement from the club. This book is unique in that it gives us some deeper insights into the general gang mentailty. Unlike the Hells Angels and Canadian bikers who might have experienced violent conditioning or neglect at the hands of their fathers and sought out familial comfort in their biker clubs, the majority of Mongols were spawned in neighborhoods where deadly violence was an everyday occurence.Cavazos does an excellent job relating what it was like to grow up in such a situation - the loyal bonds and nihilistic hedonism it creates. He gives a superb description of what life is like for someone entering jail or prison for the first time - how people react psychologically and interact, successfully or not. He also clarifies the relationship between La Eme, street gangs and bikers, and explains how and why the Mongols began inducting other gang types into the club.Intellectually, Cavazos seems to be high on the biker food chain, which combined with his fearless attitude accounts for his rise in a club that was rife with dangerous political shakers. He gives good arguments and presents damning testimony of law enforcement's overreach in their zeal to earn brownie points by busting outlaw bikers - but it's siomewhat undermined by his casual endorsement of his ultra-violent comrades.Like most of the biker memoirs, this one is very well written. Cavazos has a great voice, a clear head, and a very interesting story to tell.

I've read quite a few books by other bikers as well as LEO's and documentary type writers. If you're looking for a book about the Mongols this ain't it. This book is by Doc...about Doc....who portrays himself as a maligned and misunderstood individual who was only trying to make the Mongols better. He's full of s***...he's a gang-banger...not a biker...and the Mongols finally realized that and kicked his ass out.

not bad...not good
i first read the billy queen 'under and alone' which i liked, this wasnt to bad, there were some great stories within the story, but i found it bogus as to how when anything was going to go down how cavazo would minimize his role and play the "i didnt want to do it but i had no choice" victim card. Its like he thinks that the reader is an absolute moron. Though not a 1% myself i have been around enough of those guys to know that they are far from angels or 'victims'...and in this case for cavazo to try and make us believe that he was just trying to run a boys club of dudes who wanted nothing more than to just hang around and drink beer and party is obscene...they didnt get their rep by knitting doylies and i dont believe for a minute that trouble always found them...in the same way i dont believe he had no knowledge of what was happening within his organization!!! And as time has proven he too turned out to be a rat bastard and a turn-coat, so all his big talk and mffm mantra was a load of bs making his book read like an even bigger load of crap!!! worth the read if u want both sides of the story, but he comes across as a 'wrong place at wrong time' victim and not the ruthless leader we all know he was. i gave it 3 stars out of kindness...and pitty

A Balanced Account
This is a well written and readable book. It challenges the stereotype image in a balanced and logical way, using sound reasoning and believable arguments. It has the ring of truth about it and therefore does not need to resort to sensationalism or bulls***.Ruben Cavazos is plainly a high intelligent and motivated individual who comes across as charismatic, honest and likeable. This is a book I will return to again.
