Q: Would this drop box comfortably accept a medium/large sized smart phone? Would it comfortably accept a flip phone? Thank you in advance for your help.

Yes, you could drop any flip phone or smart phone into this box, but you may want to fit a piece of foam to cover the bottom to cushion the drop. If the phone is a phablet bigger in one dimension than an A10 envelope, it may lead to jams. Also, if too many phones piled up in the bottom (maybe over 5 to 15 depending on how big they are, how they were dropped in, and then how they stacked up at the bottom), it could interfere with the swing of the door.

Q: Can anyone tell why this is recommended for indoor use? (I want to use it outdoors)

This is a very durable metal box. I think you could use it outside, but you would have to seal it well. After time it would rust and because of the holes to mount it on a door you would have to mount it to protect the mail from weather. My recommendation to save you time and hassle is to buy one made for the outdoors.

Q: Could this be mount in the wall of a home?

It is meant to be mounted on a door. The back has a little door to access the deposits and the four holes in the front are where you bolt it down from the inside. There would have to be an opening in the wall for the deposit door.

Q: Can this be attached to an autmatic garage door?

If it is a commercial roll-up type door then NO. If it is a typical residential type door them probably with some creativity. I am sure it could be attached. After looking at my garage door I think some issues would arise. 1) Thickness of door.... this is designed to install on a typical wood/steel/fiberglass entry door. I think it could be mounted with the use of some additional wood to adjust for door thickness. 2) The height of your garage door panels..... my panels are only 10" so Installing the box would interfere with the proper opening of the door. 15" H x 12" W x 6" D 3) Safety....you would have to add some additional attachment points so that when the door was opened (assuming it's a overhead type door and not a swinging door) the box would be supported while up in the air. I'd add two more attachment bolts to give it a secure mount when the door is open. I had a boss once that used to say anything could be accomplished given enough time, money and motivation.
