Honing to a 'T'!
As an ex- butcher turned Chippy I' pretty fanatical about things being sharp, and the Sharp Pebble range ensures just that. Quality products that do the job!

Leather sharpening strop and paste
I purchased a bamboo mounted leather sharpening strop from Sharp Pebbles having found them via a web search. The goods arrived very quickly, with the sharpening paste and very clear instructions. Follow-up was excellent. I am very happy to recommend them. Geoff Mills, Beckley, Oxon.

It works, but takes some getting used to.
I have some other strops, which are easier to use and produce better results, but it looks beautiful and does work. The green compound doesn't go on that easily, but you can hone an edge.

Surface preparation of leather a lot to be desired, but definitely salvagable....
Ease of use, about as easy as you would expect a piece of 3mm piece of leather stuck to a bamboo wood block to be, but in this case with one caveat. Although I pretty convinced that the leather component is indeed leather throughout, sadly the surface preparation of the leather leaves a lot to be desired. Frankly, it's simply too hard and too dense and impenetrable. Not sure what they did to the leather but when touched it feels almost plasticky. How this was intended to absorb and retain a stropping compound I can't possibly imagine. Fortunately I was able to solve the problem by rubbing the leatherside on a flat sheet of sand paper to remove the top to reveal the raw unprepped leather underneath, so it looked more like suede. Then I had to be careful to remove all traces of residual sanding grit that had become embended in the surface, with a stiff bristle brush. Only after this could I effectively apply the honing compound.

Pretty but pretty useless
Very nicely presented and all that but far too fragile for workshop use. Admittedly the first little nick in the leather was because I accidentally made the tiniest forward movement when sharpening a chisel - but I subsequently tore the surface in two other places while pulling a bench-plane blade backwards in the approved manner. Basically the leather is way too soft for stropping woodworking tools. After a week I threw it away and made my own out of a bit of leather reclaimed from an old briefcase glued onto a block of 22mm birch ply. Works much better and I can use the reverse face of the plywood as a hard stropping surface for polishing out the flat sides of chisels and plane irons. So, all in all the most expensive small block of polishing compound I've ever bought!
