Covers 15 of the most common wild greens
PROs:* Although the book covers only 15 plants, the once it does cover it does so with the depth that no other book that I know of does.* It is picture heavy, and covers most anything that one would want regarding each plant.* Has a lot of details of what and when to harvest to ensure that one does so at optimal times and growth stagesCons:* covers only 15 plants* Aside from the number of plants covered, the only other drawback is that does not cover nutritional values in depth, probably because the values would depend on the soil and time of harvest which would be too variqble to rely on.Plants covered:Foundation greens:Lambs quarter, Chickweed, Mallow, PurslaneTart Greens:Curly Dock, Sheep Sorel, Wood SorelPungent Greens:Field Mustard, Wintercress, Garlic Mustard, Shepherd's PurseBitter Greens:Dandelion, Cat's Ear, Sow Thistle, Nipplewort

Great resource but wish there was more info on toxic plant look-alikes
Edible Wild Plants is a great resource. It's especially useful for edible wild plants that commonly grow in North American lawns and gardens as "weeds." That said, I definitely disagree with the reviewer who said it's "The only edible plant book you need." There are many other great foraging books out there that have different plants and useful general knowledge. Sam Thayer's books come to mind. While Kallas mentions the importance of proper plant identification, I wish he had included more info on toxic look-alikes. For example, he doesn't mention spurge (poisonous) in the purslane chapter. Once you know the difference, spurge and purslane are pretty easy to tell apart, but they often grow close to one another and look enough alike to require caution when picking.

The only edible plant book you need
if you are like me, you love books. You're looking at a book on edible plants that could easily be the only one you place on your shelf. This book has what's important and some others lack- vibrant, clear, close up and full plant color photos for identifying.I purchased this book for my mother. She lives in Oregon, and is always trying to identify things on her property. I liked this book so much when I received it to give to her- I purchased another for myself.Everyone who loves nature and likes to know what they are walking around, and if it's edible- this is your book!On top of that, I went to the author's website and found a long list of workshops, with a variety of topics to learn and experience. They were mostly in Oregon, some were in other parts of the PNW or US in general. I hope to take my mom up to one someday soon!

I am SOOOOOOOO excited! The book is perfect
I live in the outer suburbs of San Diego. Currently renting a house with a lot of dirt that explodes with weeds in the spring. I have a small garden with your typical greens, kales, lettuces... but have been supplementing my garden salads with all the glorious weeds growing everywhere else. I love picking stuff and eating it, right from the earth. Always have. I'm strange.... I admit it.... In this case though, not sure what I'm picking and eating. Nothing has killed me yet, so I figure it's all good. I figured I should probably figure out what I am eating because there are a few (turns out it's Mallow and perfectly edible) that I have not tried yet. Well.... turns out I have around 7 varieties of edible weeds/greens growing just in one area. This is great because the gophers occasionally annihilate an entire cilantro or parsley plant which makes me nuts (I love my parsley and cilantro) but they don't bother the weeds. That's a WIN for sure! I'm really excited about this book.If a giant asteroid slams into the planet and the grocery stores run out of food, until I freeze to death I'll be eating like a king with all the weeds on the hills around my place. Snag a piece of citrus from any of the g'zillion citrus trees in the area (including orange, tangerine, tangelo, lime, lemon, lymon and grapefruit which are all hanging over a fence from the neighbors house, in massive abundance) and walla! Instant salad dressing for my end of the earth gourmet feast.Life is good and the book is great if your seeking identification of local weeds, certainly in the Southern California area.

In my top 4 foraging books!
This is one of my top 4 foraging books. I have a stack of foraging books- some books ago it used to be knee high. Why is this such a standout? Because it goes into a level of detail that let's you overcome the omnivores dilemma on the plants covered. This book covers leafy spring greens and covers them well. It is not your typical book covering a large number of plants in poor detail. Instead it covers a few plants in sufficient detail to actually teach you how to eat them.

Just amazing. Thank you for writing this book Mr Kallas
Just amazing. Thank you for writing this book Mr Kallas ! Even though im in the UK, there are plenty of plants in here that are applicable. The depth he goes into in helping identify the plants is unrivaled in ANY book i have ever seem on the subject (and i have seen many). The parts used, time of year for harvest, look-alike dangers... Its simply ALL there !! Even the quality of the paper used ! If you dont get how i feel about this book by now, there is nothing more i can say. I own roughly 40 books on topics such as this (all published in the last 10 years) and none are allowed to sit on the same shelf as this one lol. If he wrote a book purely based on UK plants ?....OMG i feel faint

What I like about this book (apart from the subject matter) is ...
What I like about this book (apart from the subject matter) is that it's made from a plastic coated paper which means that you can take it with you and read/check stuff even if it's raining. It's not cheap but I'm happy to pay for a good product. Very comprehensive and a must-have if you're into foraging.
