Coronavirus and Christ

John Piper’s view, based on the Word of God, and a Christian worldview is spot on! His writing is understandable, though deep, informative, and a wake up call for Christians as well as a light for the unsaved all around us. The book is short and filled with practical advice. I recommend it with an A+!!

If that sentence (from chapter 4) seems offensive or unbiblical to you, then I would encourage you to read this short treatise by John Piper (or listen to it for free on the Desiring God site). In the first half of the book he walks the reader/listener through Scripture and philosophy to explain that "the same sovereignty that could stop the coronavirus, yet doesn’t, is the very sovereignty that sustains the soul in it. In other words, if we try to rescue God from his sovereignty over suffering, we sacrifice his sovereignty to turn all things for good." In the second half, he again uses the backdrop of Scripture to explain some of the ways God may be using the current pandemic for ultimate good purposes, even if we cannot fully see or understand them. I am thankful that Dr. Piper took the time to write this and share it freely through his ministry's site. If you have read or listened to John Piper in the past, you will once again appreciate his unwavering passion for the glory of God and the joy of humanity - He truly is most Glorified in US when we are most Satisfied in HIM! And if you have personally spent time with him, you will feel the humble, pastoral warmth in his teaching. At seventy-four years old, he is still running the race and calling others to join him, and I for one am very thankful for it!!!

This is so well written! It is the best succinct explanation of God's sovereignty and goodness and how they relate to suffering I have read, and I am a Seminary grad. It is biblically faithful and yet Piper exudes his deep love for God in Christ so winsomely. This book has two parts: how God is Sovereign over the Coronavirus and everything else, and what God it's using the Coronavirus to accomplish, according to the Bible. This second part has something for everyone, because God is using this global pandemic in many ways and in every life. This is a must-read! Buy a bunch of copies to give away, too!

Although I usually do not see eye to eye on many theological topics with Pastor Piper, I really appreciate this book. It is a blessing to be reminded that God is in control and that believers, ultimately, have nothing to fear.

I am not a John Piper fan but can only shower this book with accolades. He is strongly reformed and using the sovereignty of God, he tackles the problem from there. He does not sugar coat that God is free to do as He chooses and is not obligated to explain Himself. We must trust and this is an opportunity for Christian growth and new beginnings. He gives a number of things he thinks God is accomplishing in this pandemic. It is well thought out and gives pastoral guidance and comfort. This book shows what a godly man with good theology and pastor's heart can do to build up the body of Christ and give comfort in the face of adversity!

Highly recommend. Our church did a video bible study of this book, and it is a quick read, filled with relevant and Christian guidance. Well written, and a great source during this really incredible time. Thank you for this book!

We,as God’s people, need a voice to remind us of the Sovereignty and goodness of God. Not a self-righteous cry but a love call to the unsaved and unreconciled. A wise word to remind us God is at work. Let us awake from our slumber and no matter what happens under the shadow of COVID19 that we trust God. Thank God for Rev Piper, the obedient voice of a servant of God. Read this book with clear eyes, open Bible and whispered prayer.

I thought Piper did a great job at the beginning of the book explaining why we should take the Bible as the word of God. He also did a nice job of giving reasons for suffering in general, based on the Bible as the word of God. He then asks specific questions and answers to why the coronavirus pandemic makes sense from a Christian perspective. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the subject. But, the key to understanding Pipers answers are based on belief in the Bible as the word of God. Maybe, Piper will change your perspective. Even if you don't agree with Piper, it's a thought provoking read.

A good and timely read. I read this in April 2020. I struggle with some concepts but it made me think about them. We need to think about how we think and ask ourselves if are using good reasoning. Faith, of course, should always be liberally applied.

Great book for anyone confused by the apparent contradiction between God's love and His ultimate purposes on planet Earth in 2020. John Piper's deep commitment to the Word guarantees a minimum of personal opinion and a maximum of Biblical Truth. Thanks Lord, thanks John!!

Excellent . Piper is full of explanation why God has brought this corona virus and his reasons for it. There are numerous quotations from scriptures that back up his evidence. He ends with a prayer 🙏 to help us all get through this difficult time. I thoroughly recommend this book .

Man sollte beide Büchlein hintereinander lesen: Während der eine John, John Piper, der Souveränität Gottes und auch der Gefallenheit der Schöpfung im Zusammenhang mit dem Leid mehr Beachtung schenkt, widmet der andere John, John Lennox, auch einige Gedanken der finalen Gerechtigkeit, d. h., er wird dem eschatologischen Vorbehalt jeder Annäherung an die Theodizee gerecht, und lässt den mitleidenden Gott nicht unerwähnt, den ich bei Piper vermisse. Seelsorgerlich feinfühliger und mir zugänglicher ist definitiv Lennox.
