SCHLAGE Dexter by Schlage JD60626 Single-Cylinder Deadbolt, Brushed Chrome

Installing a deadbolt lock is generally simple - I've done it many times. Schlage has always been a top brand in locks but this was a real disappointment. There are two main threaded bolts that hold the two sides of the lock together, one of these bolts would not go through to the other side - it would start in the threads of the hole and then twist and stop about 3/8" from being seating the lock. I tried switching screws, no difference. I tried fitting it with the lock out of the door - same problem. Because this is a threaded fitting you can't just drill out the obstruction. The screws that secure the "strike plate" into the door frame were too short to provide a secure latch. Another trip to the hardware store to purchase the correct ones. Defective manufacture. I always thought you could count on Schlage.

The locks appear to be made in the same factory as the crummy Kwikset 'Defiant' locks and suffer from the same crummy quality. They are difficult to rekey due to the outrageously sloppy tolerances and the fact that the tailpiece is retained by a flimsy metal cap that cannot be removed without destroying it and is not available as a replacement part. On top of all of that, they are easily defeated in seconds with an elementary attack.I will never buy a Dexter or a Defiant ever again.On the upside, they are decent beginner practice for bumping and picking, because you can't a do a lot of harm to something that had no value to begin with.

Very low quality compared to what it was.I purchased this lock in the hope of replacing parts on my old lock, which are of the same type.When I disassemble the old lock, and compared with the new one I got, I can find out how low quality the new one is. The old one is made out of solid brass, while many parts of the new lock is hollow, and with forged metal. Although I do not know much of locks, I can tell the core has changed and at least the new one doesn't "looks" as solid as the old one.

I bought this to replace an existing brass SCHLAGE deadbolt, only to discover that the required latch hole(one inch) is 1/8" larger than the current lock and the lock itself requires a larger hole as well. Reaming a hole to a precise larger diameter is VERY problematic so I had to return the lock. The listing, "Fits all standard door preps", was clearly wrong.

Be aware that the bore (the hole in which the lock fits) is 2 inches. Mine was 1 3/8, but the 2 inch bore was not specified anywhere that I saw in the product specifications. I gave this lock one star to call attention to this. Otherwise, it seems to be of reasonable quality.

This is the second time I have been asked by Amazon to rate a purchase on an undefined dimension. For that matter, why ask about the thickness of a lock? Anyway, the lock is just fine: attractive, easy to install, and compliant with the color required by the homeowner's association rule that required me to replace its predecessor.

I rekeyed this to match my Schlage front door, no issues. I bought the Schlage re-key kit off of Amazon as well. If you're going to do this, watch a Youtube video, the directions in the rekey kit are garbage.I actually purchased three of these and rekeyed all of them. Back door, door from kitchen to garage and back door of garage. Have been using for about 6 months now, no issues at all.

Love the bright chrome finish, keeps the modern theme going in our house. Super easy to install and great quality. Can take them to Lowes and have them keyed alike to other Schlage locks in your home. Very pleased.
