Great Film About the Complexities of Being Undercover Especially Chasing After Extremists
Great movie. Nice to see Daniel Radcliffe extend his talent beyond Harry Potter. This movie offers great insight into the culture of extremists in America. I have seen people with the behaviors displayed in this movie, so it's not fake what people can be like in our country. Let us not deny the existence of extremism in this nation as much as they exist in the Middle East. These people are terrorists in the same way, but of a different race/color. So, those who claim this movie is leftist propaganda is simply promoting right wing propaganda. This is simply a movie about people who are interested in "genocide." The word does exists, right? That's because there are people who believe in such a concept. The true focus of this film is about the complexities of being an undercover officer especially when trying to catch extremists. It takes an emotional tow on the agent. If you took the same officer and place the situation in the Middle East trying to capture an extremist there, the same complexities would take place on the undercover agent whether you are trying to catch white extremists or Middle Eastern extremists. Dealing with extremists is a difficult task all together. They are simply dangerous people to anyone outside their circle.

Explosive Performances
Daniel Radcliffe's performance was over the top. He was able to carry the plot to the very end. He has definitely come out of the kiddie acting, and has graduated to the level of serious adult acting performance. Bravo, Danielle!Toni Collette's acting was kind of mild and held back. I'm not really sure why that is. Her performance was absolutely stellar, as usual, but something was off. I can't put my finger on it.All the other actors gave outstanding performances as well. The passion, rage, radicalism, and raw idealism for their cause was palpable beyond the screen.A five-star rating of this film is an understatement.

Ragussis Provides A Harrowing And Realistic Look Into America's Domestic Terrorism Issue
The theater I run hosted a private screening of Imperium with director Daniel Ragussis and former FBI agent Michael German, the author of the book the film is based on, in attendance. Before devoting my life to popcorn and DCPs, I studied politics with a concentration in conflict and security, so it was interesting to hear about the real life investigations as well as why Ragussis chose this topic for his first feature.During the Q&A, Ragussis said he chose this topic because he wanted to explore how people with these beliefs get to that point, regardless of how disturbing and problematic their views are. White supremacy is a very complex issue that has more depth and is more widespread than most people know. With the exception of September 11th, white supremacist affiliated terrorism is the strain of terrorism that is responsible for the most deaths on U.S. soil. This is a fact that is often glossed over while focus is aimed at international terrorism and conflict. This film does a very good job at showing not only the origin and depths of the beliefs but also the variety of the sects that rally around the idea of white supremacy. Other films tend to go, "here is this extremely disturbing and problematic belief system that you know bullet points about and we are going to be here for a while" while Imperium actually asks "why?" In the film you see everyone from basic skinhead thugs, to philosophical propagandists, to paramilitary groups, to shock jocks just along for the ride and everyone presents their--albeit horrifying--"justifications." You also see the frightening normalcy of the people involved with the groups--the local pharmacist, sports coaches, teachers, people with not so much as a parking ticket on their record, and some of them have kids existing in these vile and toxic environments; other films tend to have the characters associated with white supremacy condensed down into one-dimensional, caricatured catch-alls of white supremacist beliefs. Hearing a stream of skewed yet articulate logic end with a proclamation of the need and willingness to commit violence is more unsettling than characters just boldly sporting tattoos, insignias, and spewing hate speech.Maybe some people don't want or need to have that level of--for lack of a better word--justification presented in a movie that handles such a horrific topic, but I found it a much more engaging story than ones that use the subject matter to create a more straightforward, visceral opposition punctuated with a morality tale. The film did suffer from the inability to effectively portray the passing of time. Nate Foster seemed to make the transition from timid and nerdy desk worker hoping for the chance to become a "true secret agent" to undercover and deeply embedded with neo-nazis in a very short amount of time. Similarly, I really had no gauge of how long he was undercover; it felt like a few weeks to a month or two max while the actual investigations performed by Michael German lasted for 20 months.Daniel Radcliffe truly stood out in this film. While the transition did seem rushed, he was believable both before and after. I believe he truly captured the duality required of someone in Nate Parker's position and showed the struggle one would have vocalizing and acting on a hateful belief system that was not truly their own.I am in no way trying to justify the actions or beliefs portrayed by the characters in this film but rather appreciate the level of realism and complexity Ragussis was able to bring to a very serious issue that is often stereotyped, caricatured, and reduced to basic elements in film.

A necessary depiction and well formed in all aspects of filmmaking.
This movie does a great job at sharing both sides of the white supremacist coin and pushing the envelope for the viewers. I doubt there wasn't any backlash from this movie from the so called "proud boys". Thank you for making this movie. I hope not just white people see it

It was good but could have been better
Daniel Radcliffe movies are always a bit of a gamble. I tend to love or hate them. In this movie, he did a phenomenal job. He did a lot of subtle acting that had me feeling the paranoia and fear with him. The plot, specifically the ending, however, just wasn't that great. It fell flat and was wrapped in too neat of a bow. It's still worth a watch, though.

Good
This movie is slow and there are a few parts which may seem corny but this is exactly how dumb organizations like these run. I was forced to go with a roommate of mine to a pyramid scheme conference and it feels exactly like the weird white power conference they had in this movie. As stupid as it looks and sounds, there are enough people pouring millions of dollars and years of life into it. I feel it is accurate representation how such an environment would be. Also, I think this is the first movie I've seen that addresses KKK as a terrorist organization so bonus star for that. And for everyone who says this is just liberal propaganda, it was inspired by real life events.

After reading other reviews...
...I came to the same conclusion I started with; the world is filled with hopeless cranks and some of them are violent. This movie shares a moment in history when so many rush to the left or the right trying to find their way in the inevitable melting pot occurring globally. The movie showed that we're not all that different but choose a path that helps each of us embrace what we believe to be the truth. The Earth is round so it doesn't matter going left or right, we still end up facing each other. What then? Five stars, I love this movie with all it's flaws.
