A mixed bag with few classics
Western Classics Collection contains nine westerns, but only two that would be generally seen as classics--Anthony Mann's last James Stewart western The Man from Laramie and Cat Ballou, the comedy tha6t netted Lee Marvin his Oscar.A third, Buck and the Preacher ought to be since it's (a) a groundbreaking Black western (b)Sidney Poitier's directorial debut and (c) all kinds of great fun. As a director, Poitier has a nice way with a shootout and an even better way with a horse chase. He only acted in two westerns, this and Duel at Diablo, and he was a compelling enough presence in both that it's a shame he didn't make (or wasn't cast in) more, though here he lets himself be gleefully upstaged by Harry Belafonte's fast-taking conman/preacher.Of the rest, Bite the Bullet is the main reason I bought this, just for the sheer star-powered chemistry between Gene Hackman and James Coburn as a pair of aging ex-Rough Riders; toss in Ben Johnson, a surprisingly nuanced Dabney Coleman and the then- 29-year-old Candace Bergen in all her loveliness and this is a solid enough western whose parts more than make up for its several deficiencies. BTW, I've never found a wide screen version of this on DVD, so I was briefly pleasantly surprised the package listed this as 2:35 to 1. Sadly, that lasted exactly as long as the opening credits, then it reverted to full-screen. Still, that doesn't affect the charms of the actors, or the good Alex North score.Sam Raimi's The Quick and the Dead and Walter Hill's Geronimo: An American Legend are both well acted and staged, but the less said about the rest the better, except to say The Villain answers the question: is it possible to make a comedy so bad it's unintentionally funny: it isn't. It's so unfunny you wonder how it even looked good on paper, while the ridiculously overblown, perversely-cast McKenna's Gold is unintentionally hilarious. All in all, despite the dogs, I'm glad I bought this.

Disappionting
Bite the bullet, Mountain Man, Villain, Mackenna's gold are in pan and scan 4X3 format with VHS like quality.Bite the bullet, Mountain Man are butchered by poor editing and Villain tries too hard to be funny.Others ok though.

Déception pour la traduction
Il n’y a que 2 films qui ont été traduit en français à l’audio, les autres sont seulement sous-titrés en français ... vraiment très déçu parce qu’avoir su je ne les aurais pas acheté.
