4K VERSION WORTH THE INVESTMENT
Was greatly encouraged to invest in the 4k version of this 2005 offering bysome of the reviews written.Having watched it now my thoughts are simply 'WOW' this a film I haveindeed watched a few times since buying it on Blu-ray, however in my opinionwatching it in this format was like watching the film for the first time, everythingso vibrant. When I look back on the old 1953 version which of course lacked the special-effectson offer these days and indeed the 2019 BBC effort which I found hugely disappointingthis version for me simply stands-out as the best.Certainly, worth the upgrade in my view.Below, my original Blu-ray review....WHAT WILL STOP THE INVADERS ?The film has since it's release attracted mixed reviews many 'slate it' some love it,....myself, Ilove special-effect spectacles and watch films to be entertained, this 'Steven Spielberg' offeringdoes just that, a story of blind panic and intense fear......what if?'Ray Ferrier' (Tom Cruise) a dock worker lives on his own these days, every so often he has histwo children over to stay, 'Robbie' (Justin Chatwin) who doesn't really want to be there, and 10year-old 'Rachel' (Dakota Fanning)A strange phenomenon occurs in the sky's that is totally unexplainable, lightning strikes (lightningnever strikes in the same place 'Ray' tells his Daughter....till' now that is) power fails, holes areappearing in the ground, a loud rumble causes earthquake-like conditions.Panic quickly sets in, people are running around like headless chickens but have no escape fromwhat is happening, buildings and fly-overs are collapsing, all of a sudden, giant machines surface, the 'World' is under attack.'Ray's' priority has to be his 'Kids' as the machines begin to exterminate all human life seeminglyand destroy structures. There's only one thing to do - 'run' - 'Ray' sets off with his children in an attempt to find a safe haven, however, they will soon discover a place of safety doesn't exist as the 'invaders' broaden their assault. The temporary safety they thought for a short while they had found is quickly no longer so, a planehas been brought down in their location leaving devastation in its wake.Widespread demolition is happening at the 'will' of the machines, where had they come from, is it reallypossible they had been planted below ground centuries ago awaiting the return of their creatures.'Ray' and his children have to fight their way through the fleeing hoards as they seek a safe haven, butthe situation is becoming increasingly more desperate for them.Young 'Rachel' is terrified by the sights that are confronting her -.'Robbie' is desperate to join the military'sfight back.Things are beginning to turn far more sinister as it becomes clear what the 'Aliens' need those they capturefor. The three are separated as 'Ray' now with just 'Rachel' in tow continue to battle for survival...What on Earth will stop the 'Aliens' and their Machines from enforcing their intent upon the planet? Will 'Ray' and Daughter 'Rachel' ever reunite with 'Robbie' or has he become a casualty of Wa/r?The film brings futuristic writer 'H,G.Wells' late 19th-century story to life.I believe the special-effects harboured in this version would have received the writer's approval.I like to re-visit films such as this now and again because of the visual impact they bring to the screen.SPECIAL FEATURES -* Revisiting the invasion.* Steven Spielberg and the original 'War of the Worlds'* Characters - The family unit.* The 'H.G.Wells' Legacy.* Previsualization.* Designing the Enemy. Well worth the upgrade.
I've had this on the original DVD for almost 20 years now. The 4K UHD HDR Dolby Vision transfer reveals at last just how good this movie is. Spielberg really pushed the contrast and brightness of the highlights when this was shot, way too much for DVD with its limited dynamic range (along with most TV's back then).Well worth watching the extensive Production Diaries on the included blu-ray. This movie used a mixture of practical, miniature and CGI effects in a way that is rare to see now.

Perfect without the Tim Robbins scenes.
Nice 4k picture and superb sound effects. Classic tense sci-fi action for 90 mins until the film falls off the rails with the painful Tim Robbins basement scene. Spielberg should do a new directors cut..

Definitive version of the movie
I’ve been a fan of War of the Worlds for as long as I can remember, from the book, to the Jeff Wayne’s album to this movie.I know when it was released it was not everyone’s cup of tea, but as far as a modernisation of the source material goes, it’s pretty damn good. This Blu Ray release for me is the definitive release. The picture quality, although taken from a 2k source is a prime example of how a 4K release should be done. The image quality is pin sharp, the Hdr is spot on and the colour reproduction is first class. The Atmos soundtrack is phenomenal and really brings the movie to life. There are the extras for those interested, although they are nothing new so I’ve skipped those so far. There are a few annoyances with the menu, such as it playing loops of the actual movie, but you spent so little time in the menu that it really isn’t an issue.I would highly recommend this to anyone looking to purchase a copy of the movie.Pros- phenomenal picture- top notch HDR- excellent colour reproduction- excellent Atmos audioCons- menu system can be a little cumbersome and annoying

A Fantastic - ATMOS - UHD 4K Makeover..
June 8th 2020 - A Fantastic - ATMOS - UHD 4K Makeover.. Really loved this film originally , but was disappointed with - the Blu-ray soundtrack .. This is perfect , I think a great reference - The first 30 minutes give all the speakers a great workout . On my DENON system , 7.2 .. If you have a good setup - don’t think twice. I saw this at the cinema on first release, and the picture on our 65inch UHD TV - Flourishes - with detail, all blacks are dark and white is very bright.. Recommended.. All round disc , many extras .. Well worth - the release price of - £19.95 - if you’ve watched it at home before - “ You Ain’t Seen or Heard - Nothing Yet “ !?

Great film!
Excellent transfer to ultra HD. Watching the film again impressed me with the cgi, the script, the special effects, the actual size of the production, and the skill of the director. Add to this a real acting performance by Cruise and the two children that shows his True ability .
