Q: Does the container have to be clear for this to work?

No the container does not have to be clear. I’m using it on a blue 5 gallon bucket.

Q: What type of connector socket is needed?

it uses a 4 pin JST-XH 2.54mm series connector. The mating PCB mount connector is a male plug XH-4A.

Q: How thick is the sensor, as measured between the two flat surfaces?

16.75mm, but the led stick out of the back case just a little to make it 17mm.

Q: Is there a way to change the led to on when there is no liquid detected? currently the led is off when there is no liquid and on when there is liquid.

The led will always lite when liquid is detected, you will need an extra led to indicate the opposite condition.
