There is a build up at the bottom of the paddle where there appears to be an insert for strength and gluing. I can't fault that construction technique but suspect it will need to be well sealed.The finish is not glass smooth, but is smooth to the touch, covers the wood completely and shouldn't be an issue in use.I may give them a light sanding and over-coat with a marine varnish because I have all the materials, and hope to make them last.
