Bhagavad-Gita with the Commentary of Sankaracarya

Contains Shankara's commentary, with the translation by Swami Gambhirananda. I'm bound to say that I prefer this version to the Sastry one because each verse is translated phrase by phrase and I find that particularly useful. The paper and printing quality is also better. I like Gita and like to read the authors thinking and his knowledge understand it.

My review is intended to offer others a insight into helping to choose which translation of the Gita to choose, rather than on the Gita itself (it has stood the test of time and needs no introduction - the Wikipedia entry is a good synopsis for anybody wanting background).I bought this book because it was prescribed on my yoga teacher training course. Our teacher is a Sanskrit expert and this is the English translation he prefers as best reflecting the original Sanskrit. I think this is a high commendation. The style of writing is highly articulate whilst avoiding being dry, and the translator/commentator's mastery of the subject matter is obvious.My reason for only scoring this 4 stars rather than 5 are:1. The commentary on a single verse can run for pages. This means the book is best-suited to those who are intending to study the book closely. Having to turn multiple pages between verses does interrupt the flow (tip: use the Sanskrit to find the next verse as it stands out much more clearly than the verse numbers do). Whilst serious students will appreciate the word-by-word translation of each Sanskrit term for those who don't speak the language (me) this can get wearing to skip over repeatedly.2. Quality of printing and binding is pretty mediocre in my view. I had a number of pages which hadn't been cut apart and so had to separate them with a ruler, for example.
