Q: If I wear a 36 should I go up a size ?

I am also a 36, and I ordered a 36. They fit true to size. If you follow the size chart I would imagine you will be okay.

Q: What does athletic fit mean? Also, are the legs tapered?

A little roomier in the rear and thighs - think cyclist legs, or those blessed with rounder bums. These had a good taper last time I purchased them, but could have changed. Not a bad cut for cheap pants.
