This Streamlight HL5X is a big heavy outdoor torch but very nice when you want a bigger light. High 3500 lumen setting offers the ability to light up the night like a high beam. 250 lumen low setting is most used setting with great runtime compared to a 250 lumen pocket or duty light. To me this is the best part of a big light like this, but high setting is nice to quickly scan a dark area. USB rechargeable batteries work very well and I like that I can also use CR123 lithium primarys for extreme cold or emergency use. Beam is more of a flood pattern imo but with the power and candela it has still very good throw. Obviously on high batteries drain quickly. Could maybe be better paired with 2 3500 mAh 18650s instead of the 2 2600 mAh SL-B26 included if you wanted to be picky about something to improve. Overall excellent big light!

I have become a complete flashlight junkie in the past 3 months. My collection has exploded to 25 and there are more on the way! I am an AVID night hiker and am just addicted to getting out in the hills at night with a perfect globe of light surrounding me so that I can see every nuance, root and rock in the trail. It is also fun because you are out there with all of the animals and their glowing little eyes. Now......what do I most look for in a flashlight 1. At least 1000 lumens 2. Hold strong on that 1000 lumens for >1 hour 3. Durable 4. Easy User Interface I really don't like lights that can pump out huge lumens for 40 seconds and then step down and fade to 300. This light HOLDS 3500 lumens the entire time I am using it. It never dims. Until the batteries run out. It really doesn't get hot either. I am stumped how and why but I will take it! 2. A flashlight has to stay stuck on one brightness level......the one you select. This one does. It has a simple UI (10 clicks to go into select mode - then choose which of three settings you want it to stay on.) I like the high/strobe setting. I need a light that can kick out a comfortably bright 1000 lumens for up to 2 hours. The Protac HL5-x does! 3. I know that all expensive, bright flashlights are rated to about a 3 foot drop. I feel like this light could survive 30! It is rock solid and covered in a hard rubber coating that makes it super grippy and I'm sure adds structural strength to the flashlight. The glass on the lens is quite thick. More so than my other lights. The large chunk of clear plastic ( the TIR lense) in the head of the light that helps amplify and focus the beam I believe adds integrity structurally to the light as well. It encases the LED and that can't be bad! I just had it out in a pouring rainstorm and it got drenched. The other light that I had with me (that cost 2x as much) had condensation covering the entire inner lense surface. 4. More about the UI. There are three, three level settings that you get to by half clicking 10 times on the on/off button then pressing it in all the way. The light will flash either low, high, or strobe, then turn off. If low comes up - and you leave it as the selected mode - you will access low with one full click, medium with one half click then a full click. Two half clicks and a full push in will get you to high. If strobe comes up - then turns off- you are in tactical mode. First full push goes straight to high. One half push then a full push goes to strobe. Two half clicks and a full push results in low. If high results after your ten half clicks. Then you are on high only mode. 1, 2, or 3 clicks and push results in high. If there was one small issue I have with this light is that it is quite large for many activities. It is too big to fit in you pocket. However, in spite of it's size and slightly heavy weight.... I still keep grabbing it for my hikes. I use a Niteize holster that I have fixed to the shoulder of my backpack. I point it about 30 feet up the trail and it is amazing! In the event of an attacker this flashlight would certainly be the best light I have. It has a fair bit of head weight and is BLINDINGLY BRIGHT! Even in broad daylight you could momentarily blind and incapacitate any attacker! Try that with a whimpy little EDC light! Ok. So for some reason this flashlight takes a little bit of the mystery out of all my testing experimentation that goes along with being a flashlight fanatic. It's super bright, doesn't step down. Crazy durable, affordable and 100% reliable. But it doesn't have any little flashing lights on it. A couple would be nice....just for the kids! Lol! Lastly....... The batteries that come with this flashlight are INSANELY POWERFUL! They literally short out my other 18650 lights when I try to run them! (The light will run on 4 CR123 batteries as well. I haven't run this set up for long though so am not too sure about the endurance factor. So their you have it! An absolutely incredible light that is so predictable it borders on boring! Tom Jensen
