Lume Cube Video Conference Lighting Kit | Live Streaming, Video Conferencing, Remote Working | Lighting Accessory for Laptop, Adjustable Brightness and Color Temperature, Computer Mount Included

Despite my trepidations on the reviews (suction cup, angle) I decided to purchase and try out, Im using this for video conferences for work and for Discord games with my friends for leisure. I opened the box, charged it up and used it a couple of nights ago; brightness was perfect, I was afraid it was going to be too bright or even feel like a spotlight on my face; I attached the suction cup to the back of my laptop (MacBook Pro 2016) and never popped off or had any trouble sticking; the angle was perfect because it illuminated the whole area around my head/upper torso and looked natural (my friends confirmed this). I wanted something small, portable, easy to use; compared to some of the other similar products I just cant justify spending over $100 for something comparable or even something cheaper that breaks after 3 uses. So far I have used it a few times and every time it has worked perfectly. Really happy with my purchase. Edit on 9/19/20: Okay, so far the suction cup failed; however, I realized that I didnt properly press in on the function cup to create as much a vacuum before turning the clip; retried it and worked; so far tried it up to this date and the suction problem has not re-surfaced. I think that the reviews claiming the suction cup doesn't work is b/c of human error and not an issue with the product.

I purchased this light because of the suction cup, assuming it would be strong enough to hold the light to the lid on my laptop for the duration of the workday. Nope. It only lasted a few minutes until the suction leaked and the light dropped off. The light itself is great, is adjustable for not only intensity, but color temperature. When plugged in, its display will identify the level of charge, so you can track its recharging cycle. It will last 16 hours at 1%, over eight hours at 25%, 1.3 hours at 100%, so great for a workday. Don’t think the lower intensity for longer time is an issue. It isn’t. The brightness is perfectly adequate at lower intensities. At higher brightness levels it basically blows out the image, way too bright. The unit has a screw hole perfect for a camera mount, so I got a flexible camera mount tripod to attach the light to, and set up beside the computer for my video conferences, which works perfectly fine. I downgraded the rating for the useless suction cup feature.

Having researched this company a bit, I finally bit the bullet and bought the mini panel light; I was immediately impressed in the variances of brightness and warm-to-cool color control. It's the perfect light to mount on my desktop computer and use for virtual calls. Price wise is worth it, albeit a bit high, compared to other lights offered out here from other companies. BUT! the control options on this one make it worth the price! I know people have mentioned that the suction doesn't work as well as it should and I can only guess that it depends on your own situation. The suction cup also has a self-adhesive ring on the suction cup, to give it a double hold when on your computer. The suction mount can be taken apart (similar to how a GoPro works, if you've encountered those). If you are using on a laptop and going to be popping this thing off and on again and multiples of times, then you may find that the suction cup doesn't always hold up as long under the weight of the light. But, if you can leave it on for some time, I suggest taking it apart and adhering the suction cup portion first (on a clean surface of your computer) and then after a few minutes, connecting the light panel portion next; this should give the suction cup and reusable silicone adhesive on it, some time to "lock on" to your computer, hopefully avoiding any falling off of the light. Also, take into consideration the angle of your computer screen, as the further back you push open the laptop screen, the more the angle of the light is going to fight against gravity 9which could also lead to it disconnecting from the computer).

This is not a stellar light, but it is decent when it is working properly. My home office is arranged with a window to my left when I sit at my desk. The room's overhead light is to my right but slightly behind me. This creates a scene with some major shadows on my face during video calls. I need a light that can fill in the shadows so my face is lighted more evenly. Even at its strongest settings, this light does not do that. It helps, and reduces the shadows, but it definitely does not eliminate them. And on bright sunny days, I'm not sure I can tell a difference at all. Then there is the issue where it sometimes works properly and other times it turns off almost immediately after turning it on. I've tried making sure the battery was fully charged; I've tried running it while connected to USB power, and nothing helps. Then the next time I use it it works fine. It has a small screen to navigate the controls, which are decently intuitive. The light color and intensity can be adjusted, and it shows the battery charge percent and time remaining. It's a decent light, if you don't need any strong lighting and if it would just work every time I needed it.

I now love this little gadget. Now, as in not right away, but that was because of USER ERROR. Right out of the box it worked great. I used it for a 2 hr Zoom (yeah, ouch) and it worked perfectly. BTW, suction cup is great. Then I plugged it in to recharge with a USB-C cable I have already set up for charging (read: from another device). Tryed to use for the next Zoom, but it powered off immediately. No number of times pressing the power button would keep it on. Plugged it back in. Same outcome. Put it in its box and said some unpleasant things to it. It was Saturday and Lume was closed. I read EVERY question on the Amazon product list. No mention of my problem. Sent a msg to Lume Cube and waited for Monday, today. Then, yesterday, I decided, what the heck?, I'll try the supplied USB-C cable. I have nothing to lose. Hours later I remembered it and VOILA! It works perfectly again. I just got a reply from the nice person at Lume Cube who kindly said, "Use the supplied cable, no others." Soooo, not all USB-C cables are alike! Who knew? Well, not me. USE THE SUPPLIED CABLE(S)! ;-)

I received my light panel today. I will be returning it today as well. Lume Cube sells three light panels: Panel Mini, Panel Go, and Panel Pro. The Lume Cube Video Conference Lighting Kit comes with the Panel Mini. The suction cup has been coated with some sticky substance, but it still requires a smooth flat surface. If you will be using it with a desktop monitor be warned - the backs of many desktop monitors are slightly curved and have some slight texture to improve appearance. They also have air vent slots. These features are incompatible with the suction cup mount. The suction cup may stick to the back of your monitor for a while due to the sticky substance coating the cup, but there will be not be any suction holding the cup to the monitor. The sticky substance is not strong enough by itself to keep the suction cup and panel reliably in place. Eventually, the assembly will fall off. The USB cables are only used for charging. The instruction pamphlet says you must unplug the cables when the light panel is fully charged. (Perhaps the batteries are damaged if overcharged?) On the back of the panel is a tiny (~2 inch) display that indicates the battery power, brightness setting, and color setting. This is the OLED display they keep bringing up in their marketing literature. Big whoop. Who cares if the miniscule status display is OLED or LCD or something else? It is not used for displaying pictures or videos. It is only used for showing miniscule icons. You will not be able to see the status icons from where you are sitting in front of the panel. You will have to get up and look around back at the status display. I get the impression that the Panel Mini was designed for use with DSLR cameras when one is out and about taking photos. Lume Cube saw a chance to make money during the pandemic and repackaged the Panel Mini as a Video Conference solution, but they did not bother to design a standard monitor clip style mount – the type of mount which is used by all web cams. Instead, they decided to include suction cup mounts which are used by photographers.

I bought a second Lume Cube for my wife because I was so happy with mine. Ring lights seem to be the best-performing option for video conference lightning, but they are big and ugly. We love the Lume Cube because it's barely noticeable when a desk is in a living space and it's easy to take on the road (when lighting is most likely to be variable.) The battery is surprisingly robust for the size and it's easy to keep it plugged into a computer or monitor (you rarely need to actually run the thing purely on battery but it's a nice option when you don't want to further drain your laptop battery. Finally, I wanted to mention that I had an issue with my first Lume Cube with the charging port and even though the device was a few years old and out of warranty the support team was kind, understanding, and helped me out with a new device. They didn't have to do it and it makes me a loyal customer.

Since may of the reviews were good, I figured the folks who said it wouldn't stick (a) weren't using it correctly, or (b) with all those complaints the manufacturer probably fixed the problem by now. They did not. It stuck to the back of the laptop for about two weeks no problem. Then started to fall off every couple of days. Now it won't stay on for more than a couple of hours. They've added some kind of "sticky" substance to the suction cup which is almost like glue, so at first it's hard to remove even when you want to take it off. They whatever the sticky substance is, it starts to wear off after a couple of weeks. Still feels sticky but doesn't assist the vacuum lever. This product really needs a new design for the suction cup. The light itself is adequate, but lights up about half of your fact at a time. You might think about getting two, and hanging one from the right of the laptop cover and one on the left. All in all, not a great purchase. Serves it's purpose, mostly, but really annoying to have to stick it back on once or twice a day.

I spent ages researching a light for my PC and laptop to address the variable lighting as I spend a lot of time on video calls and delivering training. I settled on the Lume Panel Mini due to the functionality (brightness, warmth, ability to run off internal battery or powered from the USB cable, clear digital display on the back showing light levels and battery time remaining - not that I have been using it on the battery). It is extremely well made and the silicone/latex diffuser is really good and protects the light whilst still allowing free access to the control button and scroll wheel. I haven’t had any issues at all with the suction mount but it is fixed to either a totally flat 27’’ HP monitor or the same on a 15’’ laptop both with matt surfaces. In fact it is exceptionally strong and well made as a mount. I have mounted the light directly above my high res pop up camera on the PC monitor and keep it plugged into a USB port to power it from there. It works perfectly, is silent (none of that slight buzzing you can sometimes get from LEDs), it didn’t come with a bag were I to transport it and for the cables but I can live with that. I have mounted it ‘landscape’ but there is a screw hole at the ‘portrait’ end to mount it that way too and it would fit easily onto a Gorilla Pod for example if you wanted to use it for close up photography of things. It only weights 80gms so very minimalist in that regard. For the build quality, functionality and ease of use generally I think it’s well worth the money. If you want to light a studio then this obviously isn’t the thing to use but for video conferencing it’s great and the box even says it’s for that purpose.

I bought this item to replace a cheaper alternative I had tried. Although the 'Lume Cube' is considerably more expensive than the other product, the functionality justifies the extra cost. I haven't had any problems with the unit not remaining fixed to my MacBook Pro. Actually, it takes some effort to remove it! Battery life seems good, and the charging cable USB-C adapter is a handy addition. The controls tone and brightness are user-intuitive and easily accessible. One criticism/ oversight... no carry case for portability.
