Bought this as a gift for my sister. We have a large stone mortar and pestle, and while we do occasionally use it, the base is slippy on the counter-top, the pestle is heavy and the whole thing is just a little too heavy and inconvenient to use. She liked the idea of ours and wanted one, but wanted one that wasn't so slippy..We found this one. It's made of a ceramic, rather than stone, so it's a lot lighter and probably more durable. The base is coated with a sticky rubbery mat which means it doesn't slip so much, and the grinding surfaces inside are easy(ish) to clean, and made light work of curry spices etc.It's not very rough on the inside, so you can't grind large things very easily. but if you've got things the size of cardamon pods and smaller spices, this works relatively well. It won't replace a full-size proper mortar and pestle that you'd find in a farmhouse or working kitchen, you couldn't make flour with it too easily, but day-to-day cooking where you need to make a paste or powder it's pretty darn good.As a gift, it's been very successful, and as a culinary item, I'm told it works really well.

This is a very nice mortar and pestle! It's a shiny white surface on the outer and the inside part of the bowl is a rough surface to allow better crushing. The black rubber-like covering of the base of the mortar (bowl) and the top of the pestle (the part you hold in your hand) contrast great against the white, and do their job in providing friction for the bowl not to move around and comfort in holding the pestle. They can be removed too.The size is perfect for me, I can hold the bowl around the edge to stabilise it nicely- it's just the perfect size, and the pestle is just the right length too- fitting comfortably in the palm, I find it very pleasant to use. In the picture I have shown two pieces of garlic (each about the size of a two pence coin in length).Cleaning is easy- just like cleaning your cereal bowls, and so far after cleaning there wasn't any discolouration or smell.Finally, you also get some free ebooks emailed to you that have recipe ideas, I haven't used them yet, but if I do I will update the review to include something about them. In any case it is a nice little extra!

Stylish and functional… highly recommend

I wasn't sure about this but it's brilliant. Although lighter than traditional p and ms, it is very sturdy and doesn't slip due to its base. Very easy to hand wash, the rubber foot comes off easily. I found the pestle easy to hold and it had enough weight to grind spices easily. Recommended.

It is good that the mortar has a rubber ring on its base to prevent counter damage and stop slipping. The weight of both components is neither too little nor too much. The one reservation I have is that it is a little too small for some of the applications I could have for it, nevertheless I am happy to have bought it.

What is there to say other than the mortar is solid "built", and has removable silicon base piece (removed when washing the mortar) to prevent mortar from sliding all over and scratching the work tops. Well made; and the pestle is comfortable to hold/use.I don't think you'd want to drop it on your toes...I have the smaller model and likely all I need; but if I need a larger mortar likely it will be the lager one here.Worth buying.

Heavy weight product - both the bowl (mortar) and the Pestle. The Pestle has a none slip black grip which is ideal, and a large enough bulbous area at the other end for the grinding. I got it because the description said apothecary grade and it was indeed bought so that I could grind my dad's meds so he could swallow them after an operation. Some of the medication had been resistant to other grinding efforts, but this equipment did exactly what we wanted.It does the job perfectly, and is such high quality that I will be using it for cooking purposes too. I thought it was very reasonably priced compared to other items I had looked at, and a far superior quality.
