Jeanne and the Perfect Guy

A very taught story, brilliantly told by all involved. I can't recommend highly enough.

I caught about 1/3 of this movie on the Sundance channel one day, and have been obsessed with seeing the rest ever since. I can't say I know how good it is, since I haven't seen it in it's entirity... but what I saw absolutely enchanted me. A foreign musical about sex, love, AIDS, irony... who could resist? The cinematography is gorgeous, brilliant use of RGB colour. Deffinately one I'd preffer in DVD.

Excellent seller and movie

My advice is to skip this French movie musical and get Jacques Demy's "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg" and "The Young Girls of Rochefort" instead. This movie is clearly an homage to the Demy films (to the point of casting his son as the leading man, even though he doesn't really fit the type), but "Jeanne and the Perfect Guy" lacks the charm and the visual inventiveness of the Demy films. The best thing about the movie is Virginie Ledoyen, who is as beautiful and appealing as the young Catherine Deneuve was in Demy's most popular films. The worst thing is the music. It's downright awful and the mediocre songs only made me aware of how important Michel Legrand's score were to Jacques Demy's films and the importance of a good score to any movie musical in general. I'm sure the filmmakers heart was in the right place (especially in their efforts to bring topics like immigration and AIDS to the musical genre), but their musical and visual execution falls short.

Wow. I've never seen a musical that covered so many issues: AIDs, Sex, Gay-Issues, Love. "Jeanne and the Perfect Guy" is a wonderful French musical about a woman who really loves sex, but finally falls in love, only to find that the object of her affection has AIDs. This musical is not only a splendid tale of love and angst, but is also a beautiful musical, with a moveing score and a lead actress who is beyond compare. Virginie Ledoyen matches an incomparable beauty with a lovely voice and a superb talent. She makes this musical the Perfect Movie.

i have seen this film 3 times...and everytime i have beenimpressed. the film covers a range of topics but focuses in on a girlwho cannot decide between men until the moment she falls upon mr.right. the movie covers gay issues, aids, sex, love, and compassion. iabsolutely recommend this film to everyone.

This film certainly has a winning cover design, and the film lives up to it up to a point ... if ultimately falling short of, say, Les Chansons d'amour, which it seems to be a trial run for. The latter film certainly digs deeper, and it has a cooler vibe, referring back to Godard fairly obviously. This film draws its inspiration more from Jacques Demy, and stars his son, Mathieu Demy, in a poignant role as a man dying of Aids, whose girlfriend, the lovely Virginie Ledoyen, finds herself cut off from him. Apart from a moving song in the hospital ward, the most affecting in the film and exquisitely sung by Ledoyen, the film doesn't match its tone to the subject in its later stages. However the early rush of romance, struck up on a chance encounter on the metro, is a jolt of adrenalin worthy of the greatest musicals; it aches with longing and beauty, and their scenes together are fantastic. Where is goes awry is in the family scenes, which fall visually flat, as does the last song in a modern flat with panoramic view that grates somewhat. So it is a mixed bag. Jacques Bonnaffé is rather brilliant as a mutual friend and Act-Up activist. He also acted in Cockles and Muscles by the same directors, which likewise boasts a couple of good musical numbers, but remains buoyant in tone throughout. It is better than this one, which, for all its some swoonsome romance, in the end doesn't quite satisfy. It lacks the visual panache of Honoré's films and their sense of the beauty of life that can only really be accessed by leaving kitsch behind.
