Vole and Troll Kindle Edition

This might be Iza Trapani’s best Book yet! Her take on the Billy Goats Gruff type story is brilliant — the bully (Troll) won’t allow a little field mouse (Vole) to cross the bridge without paying a toll. Like a true folk tale, the hero has to outsmart the bully. In this case, Vole teaches Troll “Itsy Bitsy Spider” and when Troll starts focusing on his own moving fingers, Vole scurries across the bridge. The next time, Vole teaches him the “Hokey-Pokey,” and on a subsequent visit “If You’re Happy And You Know It” with motions. Finally, Troll has had enough and is ready to gobble up Vole who begs Troll to sing his own song which is to the tune of “This Old Man.” Vole joins in with harmony, and Troll is so thrilled, that — well, you’ll have to read the book! Every week I read to disadvantaged preschoolers through St. Louis’s Ready Readers program, and I cannot WAIT to share this book with my little ones in three different classrooms.

My toddler loves this book and it has very nice illustrations. Both I and my toddler like the inclusion of well known toddler songs throughout the book (Itsy Bitsy, Hokey Pokey, If You're Happy and You Know It, Knick Knack Paddywhack..) I wouldn't put it in the top tier for overall writing in the world of kid books (thus four stars) but it's a solid book and we enjoy it.

I'm a Children's Librarian and this was great to use in storytime. Although it's a longish book, the interspersing of familiar songs makes it a total delight! Also lends itself to using different voices and going for a dramatic presentation. I read it to kids from 6 months to about 4 years, but I think it would be great to read to Kindergarten classes too. Different ages reacted in different ways but everyone, including the adults, enjoyed it. I liked it so much that I've bought a copy for home too in case there are grandchildren some day!

Grumpy Troll is determined to prevent Vole from crossing his bridge, but clever Vole fully intends to get his way! Kids will love seeing how Vole outwits Troll. This delightful story with its opportunities to join in the interactive rhyme will engage kids and have them asking to hear it again and again! Another winner from beloved author/illustrator, Iza Trapani.

I love the rhythm of the text 😊 and Iza's illustrations. And, Iza does a wonderful job as a author when she visits local schools.
