This is a great gyroscope! The mass of its wheel gives it tremendous spend time and great stability. Like all open caged gyroscopes this is prone to damage if dropped on a hard surface. I do not let my young grandchildren play with this because they do not have the dexterity needed to prevent dropping it. I use this and my other open gyroscopes on a plate. I don’t start the gyroscope very high above the plate so if it’s dropped, it doesn’t fall very far. When it lands on the plate, it usually keeps spinning and one can pick it up and set it back on its stand or other objects such as a pencil tip or a taught string. I like this gyroscope a lot!

Sure it costs more than you would expect, but this thing is well designed and well executed. The spindle turns on two tiny ball bearings. The disc is milled. The equatorial hoop of the frame is held in place by four tiny screws. Mine benefited from a little balancing, like you might do on a new fan. I used about 1sq CM of lead tape (for golf clubs). I divided the disc into 90 degree quarters and out the adhesive lead tape in one quadrant and spun the top. Then repeated for the remaining three quadrants. I picked the one quadrant that had the least vibration. Then doubled the weight which didn't help. Then halved the weight which also didn't improve vibration. So for me 1 CM square was best. One tiny drop of break free on each bearing. I spun it up and set on my mouse pad and it ran for 13 minutes and 33 seconds before coming to a stop. You could probably do a better job of balancing, but as it is its pretty amazing.

I wanted the best toy gyroscope I could find online, and this did not disappoint. I thought twice about paying $50, but the extra money buys excellent quality. It looks great, feels great and works great. Spins much longer and with much more force than the toy gyroscopes I had as a child. The pull-ring is large and sturdy, facilitating high spin velocity. Comes with a generous spool of extra string.

I am not often shopping for physics apparatus. But when I do, I choose the best I can afford. I wanted to demonstrate Newtonian physics to a freinds little daughter and her friends. This beautiful, simple machine is way more worth what I recieved then what I paid for. You can buy dime store toys and that's OK. If you find a finely engendered, ruggedly built scientific tool, grab it! The low friction ball bearings at the axes allow the very balanced flywheel to spin unimpeded and silently. I have built many precision devices in my lifetime. Nothing as simple as a gyroscope This DG-5X gyroscope goes far above and beyond the call of manufacturing a product just for sale. This is a tool to help explain nature's beauty. The rules, forces enforce, how a kid can ride a bike! This is an awesome, simple machine. I love it.

The Good: - The metal disc is flawlessly produced, rotates perfectly evenly, and the ball bearings minimize friction - Looks great The Bad: - The thread is hard to pin point even wetted; you will have to cut off end pieces all the time to even have a chance to get the thread through one of the holes. Which means you need a scissor nearby all the time. - Leading the thread through the hole and making sure it doesn't slip back while trying to tightly wrap the thread around the axis is hard even for an adult - While the weight of the disk stores a lot of energy leading to a long rotation time (several minutes for sure, definitely longer than the cheaper models), it's almost impossible to spin this one to the RPM needed for the gyroscope to be simply stable on the provided (very solid!) stand, a thread, or a finger tip. After a dozen tries we have not even once managed to get it to that stage, which is disappointing - the axis always rotates to some extent - The idea of the two holes in the disk is good, but maybe they could be somewhat bigger, and/or provide holes in the axis as well as with the cheaper models - The included instructions are terrible and not very helpful All in all, we think this device is too expensive for the value provided. I had a cheap standard version of a gyroscope thirty years ago already, and it was more stable than this one (it just lost its energy faster)

I have been testing this device for a few days and it has worked reasonably well. Up to this moment I am satisfied with this purchase which I will use for coming lectures on physics at university level. Update: The gyro has been working consistently well. Just one advice, based on my experience, be aware about the little screws that attach the external frame, they get loose after a while and could fall off. In this case it turns useful to have some little screwdriver at hand to reattach them.

It takes a bit of trial and error to get the best out of this machine. It can be fun, but the spin doesn't last. The teeny tiny screws that holds it together often work themselves out. You will have to crawl on your hands and knees finding the microscopic pieces on the floor. I'm one of the few people that have jewelers tools to put this back together. It does not work as shown in the video and needs constant - second by second correction - to keep this thing gyrating. They refused to post my first review and will probably not post this one either. However, I'll copy and paste this review on other sites so you are not ripped off too. How do rip off artist like this live with themselves?
