Does this work for a 1224 cartridge?

Probably not unless it says 1224. Amazon could severely use a basic information enforcement department. Some of their cartridge puller descriptions don't even say which cartridge they are for. Call Moen. 1 (800) 289-6636. Moen is very helpful, and if you are the original purchaser will supply you with replacement cartridges via lifetime warranty. And then you could post the answer to your own question. BTW, the problem with pulling these Moen cartridges is that Moen's O-rings get rock hard after only a decade or so. When new they slide in and out pretty well.

According to the description it will work with a 1222 cartridge.

Is this moen cartridge puller made of aluminum or steel?

The one I received in June 2020 was not the original version made of steel as the product description stated. It was the updated, virtually 100% aluminum version. The only thing ferrous was the small, long Phillips head screw. The Moen version is steel and much heavier weight.
