Interviews with eleven self-employed graphic artists who have created successful careers, using many of the practices found in this Handbook . Review: Fantastic Book! Worth much more than they charge for it. - This book is amazing. If you're an artist who wants to make some money selling your art, this is your book. It's got a lot of pages, most of which weren't useful to me- I could tell that just by looking in the list of contents. BUT, the parts that ARE, are all things I would never have thought of- things I really needed to know. For instance, did you know that Charles Schultz, the creator of the Peanuts comic strip, got something like 5% of the income from his comics and his merchandise, and all the rest went to the syndicate that represented him? And he was famous all around the world, so how much do you think they'd give you? And there's great advice about contracts, really important advice, and potential markets for your work. This book is the most important source of information for me. Review: Great information - I purchased this book for my illustration marketing class. There is a lot of important information about being an entrepreneur as an artist. It covers areas about pricing your work, how to manage your tax deductions it provides contracts for clients and information of legalities when facing issues with clients or art plagiarism. If you are considering becoming a serious entrepreneur as as an artist I absolutely recommend you read this book because it will help you with questions you might have and present you with information that you might not have even considered before.

Buy it. It's not just "x" job should be paid "x" amount. There's so much more in this.
This book is incredible and has much more useful information than I originally thought. It clearly explains why you should price your art and time the way it recommends (aka your work and time is worth the money), different pricing factors to consider, things to consider when negotiating with clients, proposal and contract design, and so much more. I'm not sure if it's just due to my absent-mindedness, but I just didn't expect this to go into such detail. I just assumed that this would just be a reference that I can use as a starting point for pricing my work. This really is a great resource for anyone whose goal is to live off their creative work.

A Complete Arts Resource
First, I bought this book for professional/business use as a painter and designer in order to better diversify my income streams and study the current graphic arts market. I also bought this as a resource for a business skills class Iโm teaching to artists. Second, I bought this book secondhand through Bellwether Books, and not only did the item arrive in near-mint condition, but I got a great deal on it too. Would buy from them again. Finally, although I havenโt studied the text in-depth yet, the material listed seems well-organized, thoughtful, and all-encompassing. I feel confident that this book will have everything I need and much more. Definitely worth the money, even on a tight budget.

Good all around creative reference book
This is pretty well rounded, just with the pricing part, the prices will fluctuate with economy. But it does have good material on establishing good relationships and good ethical practices. Also has a section on intellectual property rights and other legally related things to the art field. It is a good reference book for someone looking to be a freelance or start their own art or creative business. I wish I had more legal training in art school, or that they offered it.
