How do you escape the shadow of a legendary album? Simple. Make a new one that s better. With the release of Sweet Nothings, the band s 6th album, Dog Fashion Disco has once again thrown down the musical gauntlet. Melding elements of metal, hardcore, jazz, pop, country and dub the bands new masterpiece picks up where their old masterpiece Adultery left off. Since its inception in 1996 DFD has been a band that has strived to push musical boundaries and challenge listeners. Sweet Nohtings is no different. Recorded at Wrightway Studios in Baltimore Maryland and produced by Steve Wright, Sweet Nothings is a well calculated exercise in musical fusion. Kicking things off with Greta , a hauntingly beautiful piano melody driven by vocalist Todd Smith s unforgettable breathy vocals, Sweet Nothings will immediately hypnotize listeners. End of the Road is a musically ambitious number that seamlessly combines Johnny Cash style country, dub reggae and stoner metal. Envy the Vultures , We Aren t the World and Pale Horse are vintage DFD at their most twisted and heavy. Tastes So Sweet and Struck By Lightening take the band back to their ska roots. Sweet Nothings is a no-holds barred roller coaster ride written by some very talented people working at the height of their creative powers. It s been 8 years since the last DFD album was released..... Sweet Nothings was worth the wait.

FAN FUNDED RETURN
Baltimore-based Dog Fashion Disco have always been difficult to pin down. Combining such potentially dissimilar genres as alternative metal, funk and cabaret, the collective made a name for themselves with their unique crossover style. The act's eclectic tendencies backed by sharp songwriting turned such albums as Anarchists Of Good Taste and Committed To a Bright Future into exciting genre-bending offerings. The band was clearly on a roll last decade but they didn't hit their stride until 2006 when Adultery was released. Their trademark eclecticism blended so well with film noir concepts that the result was one of the most adventurous records of the last decade, a collection of stylistically varied songs dexterously bound by the theme of crime. The new album from reunited Dog Fashion Disco comes out after eight years on the grounds of a successful crowdfunding campaign, and it's totally in line with the expectations of fans perfectly epitomizing what the group are all about. Instead of venturing into new musical realms, Sweet Nothings settles on the act's familiar fusion of styles. Sturdy metal-centered arrangements are augmented by jazzy woodwind instruments and spooky keys taken straight from a horror movie. The allure of the record lies in how effectively these divergent influences are combined. The sextet are equally captivating when they deal in robust metallic head-bangers and playful funky cuts. There's a fine balance of both these track modes here. The off-kilter progressions of such pummeling songs as 'Scarlet Fever' and 'Envy The Vultures' are contrasted with the danceable grooves of 'Doctor's Orders,' the Caribbean rhythms of 'Struck By Lightening' and the idyllic atmospherics of the title track.

It stands as tall as the rest!
As anyone who has followed Todd Smith throughout his projects knows, Mr. Smith is really one of the most versatile artists around. I've been a huge fan ever since Anarchists and I've always found his music addictive and thought provoking. The latest effort from Dog Fashion Disco has proven to have more layers than I originally thought and it is every bit as good and anything they've previously release. It's been too long since we've had an new DFD album and I'm thrilled to add this to the collection. The album was crowd funded and they hit all of their objectives which means that this is the first half of a double album.I'm not one who goes into a huge break down of each song individually. I will say this, no two are the same and if you're looking for a little bit of metal, experimental, funk, jazz, and anything else you can think of, stop reading now and buy it! The depth of the lyrics are always my favorite part. From deep to bleak, Todd knows how to write. Even the album cover can have several different meanings depending on where you are in the album.I'm no professional when it comes to writing reviews so, I'll just say this.....Outstanding album, great song writing, perfect vocals, and very, very original. If you don't currently own any DFD albums, buy this one! If you do own DFD albums but haven't bought this one, shame on you....buy this one!

Not the best Dog Fashion Disco CD, but it is a new one...and does have some great tracks
Some great tracks, and some pretty forgettable ones. Not the best Dog Fashion Disco CD....but at least it is a new DFD CD. I find myself now skipping a few songs, and moving to more of the interesting ones. This album does not compare to Adultery, but that might be too much to even expect. My personal favorite tracks: Doctor's Orders, Sweet Nothings, End of the Road. But every once in a while I need the styles of Struck by Lightening or Tastes So Sweet. Tracks 6-8 are the onces I often skip. They are the heavier ones, which honestly is what I thought I would like more, but they were just not as unique and gripping as the other ones. For a band that jumps around in vocal and musical styles so much these seemed mundane (by DFD standards).

If you like any Todd Smith project, buy this now!
This album is exactly what I hoped it would be. It has been many years since Dog Fashion Disco has released an album and I was concerned that this one might take on the styles of Todd Smith's other projects and lose the feel of the originals. Luckily, my concern was unfounded and I was thoroughly impressed with every track on this one. It picks up right where Dog Fashion Disco left off. This is probably one of the most brass, piano, and organ heavy of all the Dog Fashion Disco library and it is done just as well as it was in the past. Again, Todd Smith and Jasan Stepp never disappoint. I highly recommend this album.

Another masterpiece from Dog Fashion Disco
This is honestly one of the best albums I've ever owned, I cannot put it down. The music style is very different, almost like a fusion of rock, jazz, and funk, and I absolutely love it. Plus, the lyrics are absolutely brilliant. Amazing album, and in my opinion, the best so far from DFD.If you only heard one or two songs by them before, go search more and listen to more (and sample this album!), because you haven't heard anything yet. This CD has so many music styles combined in it, I can't even put names to all of them. It's simply excellent.I was lucky enough to be able to hear those songs performed live, and trust me, they do not disappoint. Support live music, it's the voice of everyone!

Dog Fashion Disco - A sound like no other!
Dog Fashion Disco has done it again! With their avant-garde sound they have pleased the masses. I particularly like the dark spin to all their lyrics. From the heavy "War Party", to the horn infused tribute to Greta Garbo, "Greta ", and the danceable "Tastes So Sweet ", and the hip hop sound of "Sweet Nothings", this album will test your full emotional range. You'll smile, cry, and want to break something after listening. Enjoy on full volume!
