Poker with Dice, quick, simple and a lot of fun
Story: I was sat about one day rolling a bunch of dice, having a one player game of Yahtzee. I dropped one of the dice and it went under the table, so went to pick it up, but then like a complete prat, I banged my head on the table and knocked myself out.On waking up, I was no longer in my living room. I could hear water, as if I was out at sea. There were people talking and laughing. What was going on? As I sat up, I felt my 5 dice that I had been playing with in my hand."Hello?" I said. The people I heard stopped talking and came to where I was laying on the floor. They asked who I was, why I was wearing strange clothing, and how I managed to get on their huge yacht. I wish I knew the answers. After a couple of hours, and getting to know the people on board the yacht, I found out I hadn't only been transported to a different location, I had travelled in time, back to the 1940's. The crew were all very friendly and having a nice day out on the water, a break away from their homes in Canada. We chatted, I told them a little bit about the future, and introduced them to Yahtzee. They found it amusing and started calling the game Yacht because it sounded similar to the name of the game.It got late and they offered me their sofa to sleep on, as they were all having a night out at sea, and said they'd take me to shore and see what they could do to help me in the morning. When I awoke, I was back in the living room, laid under the table with my head a little sore. It was all a dream, it felt so real though. I got up from the floor and went to sit down to ponder on what had happened, when I felt my dice in my left hand, and a piece of paper in the right. I had my 5 Yahtzee dice, but I also had the score sheet that we'd been using on the Yacht, scores and names, everything. Was it a dream? Or is it a paradox? We'll never know.Review: Yahtzee, a game that will last forever. You can take it anywhere, you can even make your own score sheets. Blimey friends, it's probably the easiest game to make your own house rules to as well. It'll get you excited when you keep rolling what you need, and it'll annoy the hell out of you when all you want is the bonus points but the dice decided to hate on you.A good way to define Yahtzee is poker with dice. You have your three and four of a kind, full house, and straights. It's such a simple game but a fun genius one.The game gives you five dice. You have up to three rolls on a turn to fill one of the thirteen boxes on the score sheet. On the first throw, you can put aside any dice you want to keep and roll the others for your second turn. After the second throw, you can keep more dice, or even re-roll any dice that you originally put aside. After making a choice of what dice to put to one side, it's the third and final throw. Whatever you have after this, you must score, even if you have nowhere to put a score because you didn't get what you needed, you have to fill a box, even if you have to put a zero in it.The score sheet has two sections, the upper section and the lower section, both containing different objectives. In the upper part, it's all about individual numbers, 1 to 6. So if you get three 5's, you could put 15 points in the Fives box, and if you're lucky to get four of them, you can score 20 points instead, which is very useful. After filling the upper section, add the points up, if it comes to 63 points or more, you get a 35 point bonus towards the final score. This is quite a decider so working the upper section to gain the bonus is very important. The lower section, you have a bunch of different things to aim for. To get a Three of a Kind, you need at least three of the same dice, so let's say you get three 4's, you'd add them all up along with the other dice to get a total, and you could get four of the same dice and still score it here if you've already used your Four of a Kind, which of course, obviously, is four of the same dice and add the fifth die for the score. Easy.Full house is three of the same number and the other two dice have to be the same of a different number, this scores 25 points. Small Straight is a sequence of four numbers in order, like 1, 2, 3, 4, or even 3, 4, 5, and 6. This nets 30 points. The Large Straight is the same but with all of the dice, so it'd be a sequence of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and so on. The Large is 40 points. All these lower section scores are really helpful to get that victory, but the real feels for just getting it is the Yahtzee itself. This is five dice of the same number. Get this, it's 50 points in the bank. There's also a Chance box, so if you mess up and have nowhere to put a decent score, add all the dice up and bang the score in here. Now then, there are a few different versions of Yahtzee, even though Hasbro owns the actual franchise, there are a few rip offs. If you ever play the game online, it'll likely give you different scoring rules to that of the physical game. The game I have has Bonus boxes for extra Yahtzee's, but online games tend to let you place an extra 100 points in any box, which I personally dislike. Let's say by using this rule, you get a second Yahtzee and you place 100 points in a upper section box, this guarantees you the bonus and makes the game a bit silly in my opinion. The rule I use is the best, and makes for a more exciting game. If you manage to get a second Yahtzee, you get 100 points, and don't use any of the boxes, it just means you have an extra turn. Plus, I don't have a limit of Yahtzee's a player can get, like I said, it makes it more exciting. I've had games where we've hit four Yahtzee's and got a mega score. It might destroy the opponents, but they do have the same chances of doing it if the dice are kind, and you're not making the upper section pointless in getting an easy bonus. After the upper and lower sections have been filled, add both up, the highest score is the winner. Yahtzee is still a fun game if you play alone though to see how well you can do and how many Yahtzee's you can get, but nothing beats the experience of playing with as many people as possible.Great game and one you can play absolutely anywhere. Do me a favour, if you know someone who doesn't know Yahtzee, show it to them. It'll be doing them a favour in life.Experiences: I've been playing this game all of my life, and I've introduced it to that many people I've lost count. I think other than Magic The Gathering, this is the game I've played most. One thing I tend to find when I introduce the game to someone, they always have beginners luck and score like three Yahtzee's. It's a good thing, they get the taste of glory and I think the dice have a mind of their own, they like being throw. If the dice don't let a beginner win in style, they think they might not be thrown again? It's also amazing how many people still haven't heard of Yahtzee. I can probably understand a lot of the more recent games not being known to people who just know Monopoly, but Yahtzee has been around for over 60 years.I made a tutorial video on YouTube a while ago, it's my third most viewed video I've ever made and at the time of writing this, has clocked 170,000 views.
