Safari Dog Flea Comb

A review from Mrs. L- First of all, we do not nor have we ever had fleas in our home. We are not fans of chemical flea and tick products and won't use them. This review is for the Safari Flea comb W6161 double row flea comb and also for the W560 NCL00 single row flea comb. I purchased both this year. I use the double row flea comb on all dogs and one cat. It is easier to comb through the coat of a Great Pyrenees where the single row flea comb will not budge on the coat of a Pyr. The double row flea comb removes debris, but not all dry skin flakes that may rest on the top layer of a dog's skin. It does a good job but is not totally perfect. And I don't expect it to be perfect. The double row flea comb is well tolerated by our longer haired "fluffy" cat. And it does a good job of removing hair that is shedding and thereby reduces cat hair balls. After I have used the double row flea comb on the two smaller dogs and the cat, then I go back with the single row flea comb and give a good comb out. It removes shedding dog and cat hairs and dry,flaky skin as well as small debris. By helping to keep their coat and skin clean and debris free, their coat and skin stays healthier. One of our rescue dogs is a small to medium sized dog with tight curly hair. When we first got her she was loaded with fleas coming from a home where she stayed outside all of the time. I used this style of flea comb and worked on her coat for about an hour. It was energy and time consuming because she was so infested with fleas. I had to comb through her coat. Carefully lift the comb towards a jar with hot soapy water. Swish the comb through the water to remove live fleas and egg debris (which looked like crusty black dots), Dry the comb with a paper towels and start over. I did all of this outside with my husband holding and petting this poor dog. But, within an hour, I seemed to have gotten most of the fleas and debris off of this dog. It is important to comb out the flea eggs also. And, we did this procedure outside! Then we gave her a gentle bath with a very, very very light diluted solution of Dawn dish detergent. Rinsed well and dried her off with towels Everyday, for a few weeks, I combed her out with these flea combs. First the double row and then the single row. We never again had a problem with fleas on her ever. And she is an adorable, sweet, happy dog who loves to be combed out. She is such an asset to our family. Both combs are excellent at doing the job for which they are designed. I think that using these types of flea combs have successfully prevented us from having any type of flea problem EVER with the dogs or cats. I think it has also prevented us from using neurotoxic tick and flea sprays, collars or powders with our pets.

This new flea comb works very well in that while combing my Dal’s short fur it traps fleas between the two combs where they cannot escape. I stay away from any flea medications including the use of Dawn soap but I do use flea lamps as well and certain essential oils diluted properly in a carrier oil. Very pleased with this comb and highly recommend. And yes checking for fleas throughout the day I will always find a few.

Have had cats since I was young and none of my fur babies ever really liked when I brushed their fur with those small steel combs with the tiny teeth. It worked well but snagged their fur when trolling for fleas so they grew to hate grooming time. This comb is fantastic at getting fleas, and just for grooming their fur in general. The teeth of the comb are not sharp so it doesn't hurt my cat's skin, nor does their fur get pulled. You can really angle the brush right against their skin, knowing it isn't hurting them. The two rows of teeth work great at getting any fleas. Rescued a stray that was riddled with fleas and this comb worked amazingly well at getting most of them off her prior to the treatment kicking in. I'll share my tried and true trick for trapping the caught fleas easily without mucking around with a cup of water: 1) Pass the brush through your pet's fur several times to gather any loose fur and fleas, then immediately insert the comb into an open sandwich-sized zip lock bag. 2) Use your fingers on the outside of the bag to pull the fur off the comb. 3) Fold bag over between brushes so no fleas escape. 4) Zip when finished. Voila! All the fur, fleas and any dander stay inside the bag while your hands and lap stays clean. No fuss, no watery drippy mess, no worrying about the cup of water getting knocked over if your pet bolts! To be honest, I use the same bag multiple times to prevent waste. It is not pretty to look at all the fur and fleas inside (although there is a perverse satisfaction at seeing them dead--knowing they are no longer bothering your babies). One plus is you can easily see how many fleas you are getting off your pet each time, to see if your flea treatment is working as expected. I store my pet grooming supplies in a decorative bucket so no one sees it but me, and this creates less plastic waste. Just empty or toss when bag starts to get full. Whole process takes me just a few minutes daily. GET THIS COMB!

I have two terriers one with a smooth coat and one with a wiry coat and we had a few fleas pop-up. This comb works really well getting the fleas out and does not get caught in their fur. The reason I gave it four stars is because it has two rows of teeth very close together, and sometimes the fleas are in between the rows of teeth and can’t get them out to put them in alcohol. I would not recommend it for large dogs.

Better flea catching than single but hair does need to be tangle free. Easy on my thin haired cat, a bit of a challenge getting the double comb through my thick fuzz cat, need to pre brush any loose coat off first.
