Good but ...
I liked reading this short fable, as I enjoy all of German Hesse 's stories. But this one I felt was unsatisfying, as if the moral was lost in the dream world of the young boy. Perhaps it is deeper than it appears, as an alternative to war. Maybe the simplicity of the story was itself the moral, to live simply is to love deeply.

Amazingly comes through as beautiful in translation
I really loved these stories, simple but deep. I can't imagine how beautiful the text must be in the original German if it comes out this nice in English. Really a good read, the difference between a master and a regular writer is always clear when you see it.

Fascinating story
This Beautiful fairy tale depicts a world that is pretty much like ours and another one, which is an idealised version of it.The different points of views between an inhabitant of one star and the other. Great book by all means.

Disappointed
There are several stories missing from the third edition that were in the previous edition. Including one of my favorites - Augustus.

Beautiful, haunting and timeless
These stories are, on the whole, simple and beautiful and yet they are equally philosophical and even political. They make you question your own life and the world we live in allowing you to both step outside of yourself and delve deep into your subconscious. Sometimes this makes you confront your own nature and question your own faults. When faced with a wish of our own, would we be selfless or (perhaps forgivably) selfish? In the darkest of times would we have the strength to confront the evil before us? These stories are timeless and relevant and beautifully told. I have read them many times and hope to read them many more.

Genius
Hesse is a good storyteller and has a vivid imagination and understanding of the human spirit. Being an avid fan, I purchased the kindle edition of the book. Hesse speaks from experience and this is what makes his writings authentic and endearing. I would strongly recommend the last story " Iris " where his genius is at his best.
