To celebrate its 40th anniversary, the first ever illustrated edition of this collection of tales which takes readers further into the stories told in J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit , The Lord of the Rings , and The Silmarillion . Unfinished Tales features 18 full-color paintings from critically acclaimed Tolkien artists, Alan Lee, John Howe, and Ted Nasmith, which reveal the three Ages of Middle-earth like never before. Unfinished Tales is a collection of narratives ranging in time from the Elder Days of Middle-earth to the end of the War of the Ring, and provides those who have read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings with a whole collection of background and new stories. The book concentrates on the realm of Middle-earth and comprises such elements as The Quest of Erebor, Gandalf’s lively account of how it was that he came to send the Dwarves to the celebrated party at Bag-End; the emergence of the sea-god Ulmo before the eyes of Tuor on the coast of Beleriand; and an exact description of the military organization of the Riders of Rohan. Unfinished Tales also contains the only story about the long ages of Númenor before its downfall, and all that is known about such matters as the Five Wizards, the Palantíri and the legend of Amroth. The tales were edited by Christopher Tolkien, who provides a short commentary on each story, helping the reader to fill in the gaps and put each story into the context of the rest of his father’s writings. In celebration of its 40th anniversary, this jacketed hardcover of Unfinished Tales includes 18 gorgeous paintings depicting scenes from the First, Second, and Third Ages of Middle-earth from critically acclaimed Tolkien artists, Alan Lee, John Howe, and Ted Nasmith. Nerdy girl approved.
Father in law loved it. He didn't even know it existed and he reads so much I'm running out of things to find. He's a big LOTR fan. Such a cool book.

Great for Tolkien fans
If you're a Tolkien fan, this is a great book. I have the paperback version from years ago. I bought this hardcover edition with illustrations as a Christmas gift and my nephew really liked it. Great stories from characters in the Lord of the Rings, side stories, etc. Great illustrations.

Beautiful Next to the Silmarillion: Crisp, heavy white pages and excellent illustrations
I was a little worried about opening this book, even though I had bought the Silmarillion Illustrated Edition and loved it. After buying the Silmarillion, I had purchased the one-volume illustrated edition of the Lord of the Rings from the same publisher, and I was shocked to see that they used a very thin paper that did not match the quality of the Silmarillion volume. So I opened the book immediately and went through as many pages as I could. I am happy to report that it was done just as well as the Silmarillion edition was. The two volumes look perfect next to each other, and I’m very happy to have them on my bookshelf. I re-read a couple of the stories. I was so excited to have the book again. I am so happy to have it to replace the original copy (that I bought back in the 80s.).

A Tolkien Treasure—Shipped Like a Side of Fries
Unfinished Tales (Illustrated Edition) is an excellent companion to The Silmarillion and The Lord of the Rings, offering expanded and unfinished narratives from across the First, Second, and Third Ages. It adds valuable depth to Middle-earth through stories and essays on Númenor, Gondor, Rohan, and major figures like Túrin, Galadriel, and Gandalf, all guided by Christopher Tolkien’s insightful commentary. For fans who want more context and lore, this book is essential. The physical book itself is beautiful. The illustrations are incredible and the book feels substantial and well made, exactly what you’d want from a Tolkien volume. As a book, I give it 5-out-of-5 stars. HOWEVER, I’m only giving it 4 stars overall due to Amazon’s shipping & Handling. The book was essentially thrown in a box with ZERO protective packaging whatsoever and mailed as-is... As a result, the dust jacket arrived torn and damaged, with visible markings along the page edges from being knocked around during transit. While the price was good, I would be hesitant to purchase books (or anything of value for that matter) from Amazon again after this experience.

Ottima edizione illustrata
E in condizioni perfette.

Fundamental para unir tramas del universo de Tolkien
Imprescindible para conectar esas tramas sueltas que no acaban de tener todo el sentido que deben; en concreto, la historia de Galadriel, Numenor...
