The inspiration came from Anderson 'Burr' Bakewell , who has been bound to this island through a long connection with nearby Scarp, and many decades of life spent among the landscapes of Harris and people of our community. He believed that the rare and elusive spirit of this island could be captured in a bottle and shared with the world. As young people left our shores to seek their fortune, few were able to return to find work, set down roots and build a life in the place they called home. He believed that a distillery, built for not just years but for generations , could be a way to help stem this tide. So, he gathered a group of like-minded individuals around him and set out on a seven year journey to bring his ambitions to reality. September 24th 2015 saw his simple idea finally come to fruition as the doors to the Isle of Harris Distillery opened for the first time. We have the joys of the best Juniper berries first and foremost, sourced from Macedonia for their high quality, providing the dry gin character familiar to us all, giving green notes of leaf and pine. Coriander seed provides citrus and spice flavours , with discreet orange and grapefruit twists. Cassia bark lends a gentle bitterness to the mix, as well as bringing the welcome warmth of cinnamon and a degree of mixed spice. Angelica root gives some sweet floral notes and adds to the wider green grassy and herbal aspects of our spirit. The Harris Gin Bottle The Isle of Harris Gin bottle exhibits carefully considered design from the moment it is opened. A simple paper seal, applied by hand here in Harris, bears the coordinates of our island distillery as a promise of provenance . The Portuguese wooden stopper and cork is branded with our distillery logo and fits perfectly into the glass pourer. The mouth of the bottle has been extensively computer modelled to ensure a perfect pour without drips or spills. How Harris Gin Is Made We make every drop of our award-winning Isle of Harris Gin here in the small village of Tarbert. Our local distillers create this first offering from our island distillery in a small copper gin still which sits alongside her larger whisky-making sisters in the distillery's bright Spirit Hall. We use Sugar Kelp seaweed, gathered sustainably by hand from local sea-lochs, as our key botanical to express our island's unique maritime nature. The spirit is softened by the fresh, low-mineral rainwaters which flow from the nearby source stream of Abhainn Cnoc a ’Charrain. We bottle Isle of Harris Gin by hand here at the distillery too, before applying the labels and closing each one with a natural cork and wood stopper. Finally, we apply a paper seal bearing our distillery's geographical coordinates to every single bottle by hand, a sign of a truly Outer Hebridean gin , made in the Isle of Harris and nowhere else.
