Unlocking the Magic of Facilitation: 11 Key Concepts You Didn't Know You Didn't Know

A straightforward and indispensable guidebook for practice
I currently work in higher education and have spent a lot of time on both sides of the facilitation table (both as a facilitator and participant). What I appreciate about Unlocking the Magic of Facilitation is how intelligently it is broken up in to concepts, and then how well these concepts are explained (pay special attention to the footnotes - they're a treat). I also find it to be valuable to have a lot of the facilitation "best practices" I have learned over the years in a short book that is not only easy to read, but also easy to understand and utilize in my work (thanks to the numerous, well-written examples). While Sam and Meg focus a lot of social justice facilitation, the practices are truly applicable to all types of workshop, seminar, presentation, and discussion facilitation. I've only had the book for a week, and I'm already using it to brainstorm effective discussion questions to use with my RA team for an upcoming team building activity. I believe that anyone could learn something about facilitation from this book, no matter if they have never facilitated a workshop before or if they are facilitating their 1000th. I expect this book to become a permanent part of my library as I continue through my career path as an educator.

Great refresher
This is a great book for those who are facilitating difficult topics and lack formal exposure to Critical Theory. For professionals that have done formal work with social justice and critical theory, this is a good refresher that uses non-academic language to help you re-engage with the important principles of examining power structures within a training/workshop environment.

Facilitation excellence!
The authors have distilled the best tips and techniques for facilitating groups into a concise book that's both immediately applicable and also on-going food for thought on how you can improve and become a more effective facilitator. Love the social justice principles that are woven into the content in such a human way, it role models and teaches how to be truly inclusive of all audiences. We’re using this book in a leadership program for teens to help them become peer group facilitators. I also use it as a professional facilitator with adult and corporate audiences as well. Worth 10 times it’s weight in gold for any one facilitating discussions, trainings or even just conversations with others. Wish I had this book when I first started out in my career.

Kicker of a great read
Sam and Meg have produced a wonderfully simple, and useful book about one of the most difficult skills to master - facilitation. I've worked as an experiential trainer and facilitator for close to 30 years, and I came away with lots of good ideas I could implement in my daily work immediately. It's fun, easy to read, and downright worth every moment I invested in it.

Straightforward and simple; little magic
For someone who has never facilitated anything before this might help a lot.I have informal experience facilitating and was looking for a more thorough treatment of the subject. It was a pretty easy read, a bit corny and lacked the magic I was looking for.

provided an extraordinarily useful and practical tool
In this book, Killermann and Bolger have, as usual, provided an extraordinarily useful and practical tool. If you aren't sure what facilitation is or how it's different from teaching, this book is for you. If you want to improve your facilitation skills, this book is for you. If you are looking for an engaging and entertaining read, this book is for you. Basically, it's for everyone who works with people or talks with people, which is almost everyone.

A most read for all facilitators, teachers, instructors.
This the book I've needed for the 20 years I've been facilitating. It honors the magic that quality facilitating is, while providing a behind the scenes guide for how the magicians work. I've recommended this book to all participants in my workshops since I met Meg last fall, and saw her skills first hand. A great gift for a new facilitator or a veteran trainer.

Valuable for facilitators, trainers, and managers
This is a really excellent book full of useful information. Though it is directed at facilitators, trainers, and also managers, can also get a lot of benefit from reading this book. On top of that, the writers have a sense of humor that had me laughing out loud on numerous occasions. Highly recommended to anyone who has to teach or direct groups of people.
