Il professor Williamson è uno scrittore davvero godibile. Il suo inglese è accademico e comprensibile. In questo manualetto, agile e compatto, ci si interroga su questioni di filosofia della filosofia:1) da dove comincia una analisi filosofica?2) quanto è importante la chiarezza terminologia?3) l'importanza degli esperimenti mentali per la filosofia.4) l'arte della deduzione o argomentazione.5) qual è il ruolo della storia della filosofia per la ricerca filosofica?Questi e altri temi sono trattati dal professor Williamson con competenza, onestà intellettuale e leggerezza. Il libro è piuttosto divulgativo e mira a fornire a uno studente universitario le basi programmatiche per approcciare al filosofare.L'approccio che qui sembra alla base delle tesi esposte è quello che propende per una filosofia scientifica, come impresa accademica il cui fine ultimo è la ricerca della verità e che identifica se stesso come il solo approccio corretto per fare buona filosofia. Citando Williamson:«Philosophy, like all science, starts with ways of knowing and thinking all normal humans have, and applies them a bit more carefully, a bit more systematically, a bit more critically, iterating the process over and over again» (p. 5).Credo che leggere questo libro sia un toccasana mentale per chiunque sia impegnato a fare filosofia o a prendere la filosofia seriamente.

I commend this "very short introduction" as the author excels in clarity, and (mostly) in argument. It is valuable for the initiated as well as the uninitiated. Importantly, he cautions against spurious approaches to scholarship.The one significant downside of this book is the author's "limited" conception of philosophy, which seems to exclude the so-called "continental tradition". On the one side, he is able place the study of philosophy in relation to the natural sciences and mathematics. On the other hand, he hardly alludes to the importance of literature and poetry in the search for truth.Notwithstanding this bias, this book is a very short read which reveals important insights. Many professors would profit from it.Klemens
