A heartfelt film about adult relationships
As John C Riley says heβs depressed and in a tailspin. Then he meets Marisa Tomei and her son Jonah Hill leading to an awkward relationship. It turns into a battle of wills between Riley and Hill. Yes thereβs some laughs but really this is a movie about adult relationships where people have to work out how and if they can be together. I found it a very heartfelt film which I really enjoyed.

A perfect comedy thoughtful funny great actors and many awkward laughs
This is a perfect movie. The story, the acting, the editing, pace, music, script, editing. John C Reilly is a hoot. I have watched it so many times, its easy and mellow yet hilariously awkward. The directors did great character studies, many layers. These are people learning about love and boundaries while making it a point to remain vulnerable and honest for love. Reminded me of Sideways in terms of sheer enjoyment and mood but far more tender.

A pleasant surprise
If you decide to watch this movie based solely on expectations from the noteworthy cast because of their previous roles in mainstream comedy hits, you might be disappointed. This is not slapstick, in-your-face humor that will make almost everyone laugh - and therein lies the beauty of it for me! It wasn't at all what I was expecting to see when I rented it.The relationship between Molly (Marisa Tomei) and Cyrus (Jonah Hill) - which consistently straddles the line between beautiful and disturbing - is rattled by the introduction of John (John C. Reilly) into their lives. The issues that arise are the crux of the humorous conflict that drives the story. It bounces back and forth between the feel of a quirky romantic comedy, a darkly humorous satire and a low-key drama. It all combines to make a subtly played-out, ludicrous and well-acted tale. I loved it!

Not a great film, but the actors were terrific!
No, this is not a film you will likely return to view more than once. Although the picture quality and audio are fine (subtitles included!), the story is rather boring. The draw is the ACTORS (John C. Reilly, Jonah Hill, and Marisa Tomei) who are all TERRIFIC, especially given a trying piece of work. THEY are the only thing that make viewing this film worth it.A story about a young man's (played by Jonah Hill) unwillingness to let go of his mother-attachment is not new, and even Jonah's portrayal suggested he also might have thought it kind of stupid, but he played it with his special skill and made it sort of funny!John C. Reilly and Marisa Tomei each reveal their seasoned experience as actors and don't disappoint. You might enjoy this film if you view it as the slight comedy that it really is. I just expected more than the film delivered.

awkward
Not even Marissa Tomei could make me love this movie. The scene with "Don't You Want Me Baby" was fun, but the movie was a cringe.

John C Reilly fan
The facial expressions on Reilly are priceless and Tome is entertaining. This would have been better as a full comedy vs drama.

not just another typical "funny" movie
without going into too much detail about the movie, as I believe it is best left to the viewers own discretion, I was pleasently surprised by this film.On the cover it is described by EMPIRE as "supremely funny..." Yes there are some smile to yourself moments but certainly not in terms of holding your sides funny.John c reilly as expected, gives the protagonist of the movie human depth and like ability.Forget the fact that Jonah hill is best known for roles where he plays a foulmouth baffoon, as his character in this movie is completely straight and alittle tragic without a wisecrack in sight, and is more brilliant for it.Marisa Tomei is brilliant as the put upon mother trying to please everyone and adjusting to her new role as someone's steady girlfriend.Overall this is a sweet, realistic movie about the complex dynamic of a dysfunctional family unit and learning to change.

a little gem
This oddball comedy has had mixed reviews but i must say its one of the best ive seen for a while.always been a fan of john c reilly and jonah hill, havent seen them in any thing bad yet.basicly the films about cyrus played by hill putting john off his mam in weird and creepy ways, which of cause john played by reilly is having none of.its a slowburner which might put some people off but i found the film very funny, down to earth and rewarding experience.top stuff

Great Movie
I love this movie. John C Reilly has to be one of the best actors around today. I liked the story, lots of humour. I will never be able to hear Human League's " Don't you want me?" again without smiling to myself!

Oedipus the Comedy!
This movie is an excruciatingly funny commentary on the human condition. In particular, it deals with that variant of love so well documented in ancient Greece in the story of Oedipus. That is, the intense passion often experienced in the mother son relationship. John C. Reilly is the hapless anti-hero who becomes the hero. His quest to break through the unbreakable bond in order to reach the woman he loves, is a joy to witness. Superb performances by Jonah Hill and Marisa Tomei are complimented by excellent writing from Jay and Mark Duplass.
