It does come with a 15in cable which I find OK when I want the drive right next to the Mac. The cable is a USB 3.0 A to Micro B. It's easy enough to get a longer USB 3.0 cable and I have a 3ft cable that works well for me. Hope this helps.

Can I automatically backup using Time Machine?

Yes. I use my Passport for Mac as my MacBook Pro backup device and it uses Time Machine automatically. It's seamless, simple and a perfect device. Well worth it.

Is this an SSD or spinning hard drive?
