Q: Does this dry with air or only in the oven. I am considering getting into sculpting and I don't know how fast I would be able to finish a sculpture.

I'm very slow at sculpting and I've had a sculpture sit out for a few months without drying out. It gets a little stiff if left out, but nothing a little working with hands doesn't fix. I would recommend a box for spare clay and a cover while you work to keep dust off. It's been fine until I baked it. I do 225 for 3 hours, 170 for three hours, then turn off and let the oven cool naturally. It minimizes cracks on large sculptures as well as small

Q: Firm/medium less likely to break on thin small parts like ears/hair/ropes/claws for an 7in figure?

I have had no problems with medium for small parts. But the thinner you make a piece I've found could break if you baked it and still need to work on the piece. But I need really thin dress draping so I still needed to handle figure as I baked pieces. But found that super glue gel fixed any broken pieces perfect and once painted you couldn't tell. But if you are not going to paint the piece you may still see a little Crack were you re glued.

Q: What tools do I need to begin with

I bought the "Darice 11-Piece Clay Cleaning Tool Set" when starting out and have found it to be pretty versatile and useful for sculpting. Later on I bought a set of ribbon clay tools for scraping clay off and making textures, which has also been really nice to have because the set came with several different shapes and sizes. My next planned purchases will be some rubber tip tools for making softer line details and metal ball tools for making eye socket holes. Depending on what you're planning on making, I think that should be a pretty solid set!

Q: I just received my super sculey medium. and i am a little surprised by how crumbly it is. is this normal?

No I don’t think it should be crumbly or dry. It should be easy to mash together and hold a shape.
