A first novel
First novels often have growing pains... as does this one by Lenny Shulman, whose regular articles and videos for The Blood-Horse have shown him to be articulate and knowledgeable. However I really enjoyed the story and descriptions, once I got past the rather juvenile high-school-locker-room dialogue and antics in the first half of the book. I'm giving this effort five stars to encourage Mr. Shulman to do more stories about the subject he obviously knows well, horse racing and all the people and foibles connected with it. Nice fiction with a couple of very recognizable real characters sneaked in. Try again, and I'll buy again.

A trifecta win for the reader!
The feeling you get after finishing Lenny Shulman's first novel Long Way From Home is the same feeling you get after cashing in a winning ticket! It's fast-paced, fun and entertaining from start to finish! Shulman paints a vivid picture of life in the sports-entertainment field, the horse racing business and the bars and backrooms of the big cities where powerful people make and break reputations and lives. Your mind will race as you enjoy the sharp and and barb-filled exchanges in which his characters engage and your heart will pound as his protagonist Dan Henry travels a sometimes fast and sometimes muddy course to an unpredictable and exciting finish. Odds are that you'll enjoy every minute of this book. You can bet on that!

An absolute winner!
This is one great read. Funny as hell while poignant and full of drama. There are sections that you'll want to luxuriate in and others where you can hardly turn the pages fast enough.Shulman clearly has an insider's view of the sports television and horse business. But even if you don't know a triple play from the triple crown you will love the story!Hard to believe this is his first novel. Highest of marks!!!

A very cool book! A lot of fun to read!
The characters are incredibly colorful. The dialogue is fast and furiously funny. And the story keeps you interested and wanting more from page one onward as it depicts the odyssey of a sports writer, Dan Henry, as he is first drawn into and triumphs in New York in the world of network sports talk television and then chucks it all for the simple life in Kentucky, only to get pulled into the high stakes corporate underbelly of the Kentucky Derby. It's an exhilarating ride! Shulman is a great storyteller and a masterful wordsmith. Highly recommended!
