Q: Can you use a iron or does it have to have a certain kind of heat press??

We used an iron specifically made to seam a carpet. It gets up to 800 degrees. My husband did the work and said he had to turn up the temperature pretty high to get the glue hot in order to meld the pieces together. The carpet iron was around 48.00, so we bought it because we had 4 bedrooms to recarpet and each would need a seam. I don’t think just any iron would work.

Q: how hot should the carpet iron be ?

First time for me to i had it up to high..i would set it to about 2 or 3 should do the trick.

Q: So you remove paper backing first

No paperside goes down use hot iron to melt the glue side

Q: Does this work on rubber backed carpets/area rugs?

I don’t think this would work. You have to get it hot to make it stick with something like an iron. That would either ruin an area rug or not get hot enough through the rug.
